Jonathan and his armor-bearer were concerned for the glory of God and for the honor and welfare of the people of God, the Israelites. And they loved the land, the promised land. But a mighty enemy was in their land, opposing everything that Jonathan and his armor-bearer cared for. With confidence that God would deliver them from their enemies, these two young men rose up with great courage and sent the powerful Philistines to flight. Additionally, God used the god-honoring courage of these two young men to stir up the fearful, trembling Israelites so that they too began to fight with courage. The Philistines were routed. But these episodes recorded in Scripture were not written only for the people of God who lived long ago; they were also written to be an encouragement for us, the people of God who are alive today in 2021. We the church need to be stirred up today so that we too can rise up and contend for the glory of God, for the welfare of the people of God and for land.
