We can probably remember growing up on the day the church partook in the Lord’s Supper. As little children, we were like the little children in the book of Exodus which said, “What does this service mean (Ex. 12:26)?” Their question was in reference to the Passover, but we have had several questions concerning some of the services of the church.
When I grew up, we gathered at the creek for baptismal services. I would watch people gather by the creek singing hymns while the pastor and a person who just joined the church went down into the water. He would raise his hand and say, “Under the authority invested in me by New Liberty MBC, I baptize this my brother or sister in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” The person would be immersed under water and brought back up. The people would keep singing, would be filled with joy, and shake the brother or sister’s hand. At times, people would see this symbol of a new life and come under conviction and seek the Lord on the bank of the lake or creek. Baptism is an ordinance of the church.
The second ordinance is the Lord’s Supper. While growing up, I remember vividly walking into the church on the Sunday mornings when there was a table set up front covered in white sheets. I often remember that I thought this was going to be a shorter service than others, and I was excited to get out of church. I was wrong on most occasions, because the preacher would always preach about the importance of Christ and our remembrance of His death. Today, it is my desire to explain what the what the Lord’s Supper means, so everyone will understand. |
