The events recorded by Luke actually happened. We are reading accounts of history. Luke is interested in historical accuracy so people would know the certainty of things which have been believed. These events are not up for debate. The challenge for us to to figure out the impact of these events. In this message, we look at the manner and mystery of Christ's birth.
1. the manner of the birth - The birth was seemingly ordinary Mary was great with child and then gave birth to a son. It seemed ordinary. - The birth was marked by poverty There was no room for him in the inn
2. The mystery of the birth This birth shows extraordinary humility. This child was Christ the Lord (Luke 2:11). God was manifest in the flesh (1 Tim 3:16). He was made lower than the angels to suffer death (Heb 2:9). The 2nd person of the Godhead took humanity so He would destroy Satan who had the power of death (Heb 2:14). Luke 2 describes the sending of the Son by the Father (John 18:25). The babe in the manger is the eternal son of God united to a true humanity, two distinct natures but one person. It is very important not to misunderstand who Christ is. Christ is the God-man. The attributes of both natures belong to the person. He is God and man at one time forever. The Scripture sometimes emphasizes different natures at different times. God does not grow weary yet Christ sleeps. The eternal God humbles himself to a position of dependence to the point that he needed his mother to sustain his life. The Immortal dies. He left glory o come into a sin cursed world to save us from the curse. What humility! What charity!! What a mystery!!!
