Let’s turn to a book in the OT named Obadiah. In this book, we get a glimpse of the self-deceiving nature of pride. Do you know that it was pride that kept me from humbling my heart to God many years ago? Do you know that it was pride that kept me running away from God? Do you know that it was pride that led me to be disobedient to my parents? Do you know it was pride that made me think that God did not take notice of the things that I did in the dark? We have an uncanny way of convincing ourselves that our ways are right when all along we are walking in opposition to God. Proverbs 16:25 says, “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” We want to make sure that you are on the right road tonight. The road to heaven begins with humility, continues with humility, and will be full of humility as we enter heaven and esteem God properly and others properly due to the love God has shown us. The title tonight will be, “The Self-Deception of Pride.” The nation of Edom is a picture of a person who walks in fleshly desires and takes no thought of spiritual life. We will consider the following 1) Pride deceives us to forsake God 2) Pride deceives us to feel invincible 3) Pride deceives us to forget our neighbors 4) Pride deceives us to the reality of facing judgment. Pride always has consequences. Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
