Isaiah 53:4-6 can be taken together in this well known passage of Scripture. They collectively deal with the subject of vicarious atonement.
Verse 4 sets before us the context in which these words are found. There is a growing awareness by the remnant of the Jews that Jehovah's Servant actually did come to suffer. That He suffered not for His own sins but for the sins of others.
In verse 5 we have the essence of vicarious atonement. The sins of all the redeemed of God, throughout all ages, were imputed to Jehovah's Servant. He will suffer vicariously for them, that guilty, hell deserving sinners, might have peace with God and be healed from the sickness of sin. He was made sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.
In verse 6 we have the necessity of vicarious atonement set before us. Why are the sufferings of Jehovah's Servant necessary? Why must He suffer vicariously at all?
