Jesus, the Master Evangelist and Preacher, had used the law of God to reveal the rich young rulers sin of covetousness and idolatry, but he was blind to his sin and the Savior. In essence, the god of the world had blinded his mind to the truth, and the gospel did not have any value to him. He had all the treasures this world could afford, but he had not come to the point in Jesus parable of the treasure hidden in the field. Jesu spoke of a man who found a treasure hidden in a field and went and sold all that he had in order to buy that field with great joy. Jesus had offered this rich young ruler true riches by asking him to liquidate his assets, give them to the poor in order to invest some treasure in heaven, and invited him to come, take up his cross, and follow Jesus. Jesus had called this man to be one of his disciples, but this man walked away sad and grieved in his heart due to his great possessions. The man walked away from the greatest gift that money cannot buy—salvation by grace through faith. Redemption has been purchased at a greater price than all the gold in Fort Knox or in all the world for that matter.
