This week we come to Part 2 of 'Who is He? & Who are We?' as we look at Luke 9:18-36. This passage contains a rich collection of events, full of meaning and with significant implications for Jesus and his followers.
The crowds, and the disciples themselves, have expectations concerning the Messiah, including political and social reform. Therefore, once Peter declares that Jesus is the 'Christ of God', Jesus is quick to clarify the path and goal of his ministry, the cross - he must suffer and die and be raised from the dead. Those who want to follow Jesus are to forsake everything and be prepared to lose their life in order to save it. Would-be disciples of Jesus are warned of the suffering and shame that must come before glory, for both their teacher, and themselves.
The Transfiguration then takes place, providing three of the disciples with a glimpse of Jesus' glory. But whilst Peter may want such an experience to last, that is not the purpose of this event. Instead, they hear the voice of God himself, affirming Jesus to be his Son, and instructing them to listen to him. Again, the order of things is made clear: cross first, then crown; suffering, then glory.
