1. We are subject to fear because we overlook the change God brings to the heart. (The Problem) a. We fear because we base our faith ONLY on externals: v. 18ff • Seeing God as a destroying judge-a blazing fire • Seeing God as mysterious and hidden-and darkness • Seeing God as foreboding and dark-and gloom • Seeing God as unpredictable-and a tempest • Seeing God as unmerciful in His rule-and the sound of a trumpet • Seeing God as unforgiving-and a voice whose words made the hearers bag that no further messages be spoken to them v. 19 b We fear because we base our faith on a law we cannot obey-Indeed, so terrifying was the site that Moses said, "I tremble with fear." • We know the standard is too high for us to attain if even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned. • because we cannot obey, we fear the judgment we know is coming v. 21 2. There is no need to fear if you have been changed by God (the Correction) But you have come to Mount Zion a. There is no fear for those whom God now protects-and to the city of the living God b. There is no fear for those whom God now qualifies-the heavenly Jerusalem, C. There is no fear for those whom God now receives-and to innumerable angels in festal gathering
