The psalmist reasons with his soul and cries out to God in a time of great personal difficulty. He agonizes under a suffocating sense of God’s absence, as if God had abandoned him. While there are glimpses of outside difficulties and even enemies the psalm focuses on the internal realities of great personal struggle under a time of hard providence. The sermon turns our attention to how we think and how we address God in times of profound discouragement. In long struggles with discouragement we must continually fix our attention on God’s word to sustain us.
