In chapter six we saw Isaiah's encounter with God. In chapter seven we have his encounter with Ahaz, the king of Judah. It was not a pleasant experience. The historical setting is crucial, for Ahaz finds himself in a political crisis. The nations of Syria and Israel are planning an attack against him, and he must decide what to do to protect the nation. The options are really quite simple: either trust God, or turn to Assyria for help. The Lord instructs Isaiah to approach the king with assurances that he will have divine help. Ahaz need not fear his enemies because God will come to his assistance. But Ahaz isn't inclined to trust the Lord, and thus Isaiah says that God will give him a sign that corresponds to his decision. The sign is that “a virgin will conceive and bear a child,” referring ultimately to Jesus Christ. Although this is a blessed promise, it also spells doom for Ahaz, and I will explain the reason why. The chapter concludes with a prophetic announcement about the certain judgment of God that will come upon the nation. I will bring specific application in the conclusion of the sermon which the people of God must heed.
