In 722 B.C. the northern kingdom came under the judgment of God by means of the Assyrian Captivity. Those ten tribes never returned as a corporate entity. The southern kingdom, while continuing in their godless ways had a few times of coming under the leadership of a godly king. One of these times was during the reign of Hezekiah as recorded in chapters 18-20 of 2 Kings, paralleled in chapters 36-39 of Isaiah and 2 Chronicles 29-32.
Some of the godly acts of Hezekiah included his opening the temple, restoring the Levites to priestly ministry, reinstituting the Passover and tearing down the pagan worship sites and idols.
When confronted by the Assyrians he offers a tribute, and when that tribute is refused his faith takes action by humbling himself before the Lord in prayer and asking for the prophet Isaiah to intercede as well.
Hezekiah prayed with great faith for God to vindicate His Name. His prayer is answered in an astounding way as 185,000 men in the camp of the Assyrians are struck dead and those remaining leave for home.
Observations from this study include: 1. We can be godly even if our parents aren't. 2. Attacks against God's people are attacks against God. 3. In facing trouble, seek the Lord. 4. God's purposes are always being accomplished. 5. None can stand against God.
