Summary, Part 4 (final) C. GOD’S INCOMPREHENSIBLE DECREE: WHAT HE HAS DETERMINED [35:55]. 1. ITS MARVELOUS SUBSTANCE [37:40]. In the book of ROMANS, Paul focuses on God’s unfolding of the gospel to the Jews and the Gentiles and how it was received. God decided it all before the foundations were laid, yet who would ever be able to speculate it? 2. ITS UNFATHOMABLE DEPTHS [42:43]. Ultimately, God decides who receives the gospel. So why does God hold unbelievers accountable? We can never know; we can only trust in His perfect righteousness. 3. ITS PROPER RESPONSE [44:23]. Adoration and awe. We can only confess that God is great and that His decree is unsearchable. a. WE SHOULD GIVE GOD ALL THE GLORY FOR SAVING SINNERS (ROMANS 9:14-18, 11:36) [45:00]. When Paul considered this, he was lost in awe and praise. Salvation is God-centered. b. WE SHOULD PRAY WITH COMPASSION FOR LOST SINNERS (ROMANS 9:1-5, 10:1, 2) [46:00]. God’s decree did not make Paul heartless and prayerless. He prayed fervently for the lost. If God alone decides who is saved, then we are to pray for the salvation of those we care about. Contrary to fatalism, we are called to pray for and witness to the lost.

Summary, Part 3 b. THE UNSEARCHABLE RICHES OF CHRIST’S WORK [28:45]. 1) THE MYSTERY OF HIS INCARNATION [29:05]. It is unfathomable that God became man, conceived by a virgin, and lived a sinless life. Yet no other could be our savior. 2) THE MYSTERY OF HIS TEMPTATION [30:23]. Though Scripture tells us that the Supreme Being cannot be tempted, Jesus was, yet He could not sin. Yet no other could be our High Priest. 3) THE MYSTERY OF HIS ATONEMENT [31:11]. Despite His sinlessness and divinity, He took the divine punishment we deserve. Yet nothing is more practical to the gospel. 4) THE MYSTERY OF HIS RESURRECTION [32:14]. This fact is unbelievable to the skeptic and unfathomable to the believer. Yet belief in the risen Savior is essential to salvation. 5) THE MYSTERY OF HIS SECOND COMING [33:37]. On His return, Christ will be presented a glorious church, Christians will rise from their graves, He will vindicate them, and He will cast the wicked with the devil, He will reign as our King, and then His people will dwell with Him in eternity. Who could speculate these things? Yet they’re essential to the gospel because they’re our blessed home.

Summary, Part 2 b. ECCLESIASTES 8:17 [11:15]. When we are afraid, we must draw near to the Lord. When we do, inexplicable peace is given to us. Consider the hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. 1) THE MYSTERY OF PROVIDENCE [13:02]. We are inquisitive by nature, and there is much in nature that piques our curiosity: why some are so fortunate, why others seem so cursed. But the Bible tells us that God works out the counsel of His own will. Job and his friends spent over thirty chapters speculating about Job’s calamity, and would have never guessed the truth. We know that God ordained the Fall, but we can only guess why. 2) THE INVALUABLE LESSON OF THIS MYSTERY [17:53]. Wisdom consists not in proposing solutions for the enigmas of providence, but rather in admitting that they are unsolvable. This is a fundamental test of our claim to walk by faith. Despite our limited knowledge, we do know that God works all for the best. The apparent confusion of a busy train yard doesn’t eliminate the fact that it is coordinated perfectly by someone. 2. SALVATION IN CHIRST [24:20]. a. THE UNSEARCHABLE RICHES OF CHRIST’S PERSON [25:37]. Christ is God, Who became flesh; though fully man, He is fully God.

Summary, Part 1 [Pastor Nutter credits his former professor, Pastor Greg Nichols of Grace Immanuel Reformed Baptist Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan for the outline of this message, which can be found in Pastor Nichols’ book, *What does the Bible say about God?: The Biblical doctrine of God*.] Last week, we finished examining A. GOD’S INCOMPREHENSIBLE NATURE. This week, we move on to B. GOD’S INCOMPREHENSIBLE WORKS (PSALM 139:6, ISAIAH 40:28, 55:8, 9) [starting at 2:58 of the audio]. 1. CREATION AND PROVIDENCE [3:35]. No man can comprehend how God created the world, as God was the only one there. Among the Bible’s many witnesses to this, consider a. JOB 5:9-16 (w/26:14, 36:26, 37:23-24) [5:00]. 1) GOD’S WORKS IN PROVIDENCE [6:37]. The marvels of the creation are innumerable and unfathomable to us; they reveal only the fringes of His providence, which works irony in human affairs. By it the lowly are exalted and the proud are cast down. Men cannot explain how this happens, but know that it does. 2) WHAT THESE UNFATHOMABLE WORKS CALL US TO DO [10:05]: to commit our way to the Lord. When the wicked scheme against us, we are to pray to the God of inscrutable providence.
