Some in the Corinthian church believed that concerns for personal holiness and the advantages of celibacy justified divorcing their spouses, especially those who weren't Christians. But Paul understood - and wanted them to understand - that freedom, not celibacy, is the issue in believers living holy lives. Holiness is conformity to the truth as it is in Christ, and any deviation from the truth is movement toward enslavement. Therefore, the Christian who would live a holy life must live as a free man; he must order his understanding and life according to the truth of who he is in Christ and the life God appointed for him. He must embrace what "is" rather than longing or striving for something else; he must be content to "remain with God in that condition in which he was called."
