Since our morning worship service will be followed immediately with a wedding ceremony, I will bring a sermon related to the subject of Christian marriage. My text is a very familiar one, and yet it is not highly regarded even by Christians in these days. It is considered to be old-fashioned in many respects, and thus it is not taken seriously. However, such an attitude is extremely detrimental to the marriage relationship, for the Lord God Himself instituted marriage and designed it for our good. In this sermon I will deal with the two roles in marriage, addressing the wife first and then the husband. I will develop what the Lord requires of the woman, which is submission to her husband, in the same manner that Jesus submitted to His Father. And then I will develop what the Lord requires of the husband, which is to love His wife sacrificially, in the same manner that Jesus gave Himself for His church. Therefore, in both cases we see that Jesus Himself is the example that we must follow. Finally, when the marriage partners function in this manner, the marriage reflects the beautiful relationship between Jesus and His church.
