Jesus Christ was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. Part of the reason for that is that he carried our sorrows and bore our griefs. We have made an utter mess of our lives and brought upon ourselves many self-inflicted wounds. Christ carried all of them for believers. Over and over in seven different expressions, we are taught in this passage that Christ was our substitute -- that he took our place on the cross. However, this message of the cross is a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, all who think they are too good to need something so drastic as a wrath bearer. Bill O'Reilly, in his recent book "Killing Jesus" is no different. Instead of a suffering substitute, O'Reilly "discovers" a philosopher whose revolutionary ideas were simply too much for the Romans to tolerate. The "foolishness of God" is wiser than the "wisdom of men."
