I have looked hard for the right line of teaching on this incident. I think it is a commentary on the very times in which these prophets lived. There was idolatry and apostasy in the land for which God sent a famine. See ch. 8:1 for the extent of the famine. – a further 7 years. So these men of God were suffering due to the famine. They were driven to this scavenger existence because God has shut up the heavens to give no rain. We learn that God's people also suffer with the ungodly. There was dearth and death in the land all because of the apostasy of the nation. False religion and idolatry so grieved the heart of God that he would give no rain until there was a reformation. So there was death. This death in the pot mirrored that fact in the nation. Just as a wild vine was used to supply the pot apostasy and false religion was poisoning the religion of Israel. Surely we can see this in Canada also. As we see the great religions that are spreading across this nation we have to cry out there is death in the pot.
