This chapter opens with a general invitation to all to come and drink of the water of salvation freely. Jesus echoed the call in the Gospels and Revelation closes with it. However, within the general call is an effectual call. That is because there is a qualification, however. You must be thirsty and know it. None understand this thirst who never had it awakened by the mercy of God and none will come except by the grace of God. In John 6, Jesus loosely quoted from Isaiah 55:2, and argued that no heeds the call who has not be drawn by the Father. The section before us closes with a command to observe the work of the Son of David, which makes the offer of salvation possible, because God has glorified Jesus.
