When the Lord sent his disciples to row across the lake, He knew they could not in their own strength complete the task, due to the wind and the waves being contrary to them.
This incident displays the mighty power of the Lord Jesus over all things, and the miserable weakness of His people. The disciples were professional boatmen, but they could not complete a simple task the Lord had laid upon them.
Then, when Jesus came walking to them upon the water, they were afraid! Afraid of the very power that they most needed - a power to dominate and master the sea in which they were mired.
Once they knew it was the Lord, Peter made his bold request to come unto Christ upon the water. How important that we not assume upon the commands of Christ. He never promises us the power to do what we want to do, but only what He commands us to do.
Peter solicited this work from the Lord, though he knew it to be impossible in his own power. Oh that believers had such confidence in God's power through us that we would solicit hard works from our Master, knowing He will empower us to perform His commands!
Peter did walk upon the water. That power of the Lord Jesus worked in him to perform a marvelous task.
The Power of God that works in us is all of one piece. It is that same power that Raised up our Lord Jesus from the grave. That is the power that quickens dead sinners unto newness of life in Christ. It is the mighty power by which Christ redeemed us and transforms us into His image.
That is the quality of power that Christ will give His people to obey His word and His commandments.
No wonder Paul cried out, "That I may know the Power of His Resurrection!"
