Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever, so teaches the first answer of the Westminster Shorter Catechism. However, we see that both the levitical priests and resultantly the people, no longer glorify God as He has commanded. Consider the context, that God has mercifully brought them out of captivity in Babylon, and they are now given the opportunity to rebuild Jerusalem and the Temple - but the duties of the levitical priesthood to the means of grace, and especially the teaching ministry, are indifferent, lazy, and dishonouring to God. But, as we shall see, there are two sides to this coin, for the people are unteachable and therefore unloving: :
