Living on their past reputation, the church at Sardis, received no commendation. They were leaving undone the work God had for them to do. After a span of existence of about 40 years, actual believers in the church were few. Corporately they had gone from being a faithful, living, and active church to something of a spiritual morgue for the majority. Those who were professing believers in name only Christ called them to repent of their masquerade and charades of acting out the part of being Christian. There was, and is, no commendation for anyone or any church who is merely playing the role knowing what Christian conduct looks like and speech sounds like. Nonetheless the call for repentance was sounded and the promises to those who overcome are sure.
