Introduction: How did we get back to Melchizedek? We were reminded of the need to be always growing, because of the danger of sliding back (5:12-14). Since Jesus Himself is the foundation (6:1-3), sliding back can turn into a falling away that is deeply scary and deeply sad (6:4-8). But rather than be continuously anxious about our souls, God wants us to live in confidence as we diligently serve His saints (6:9-12), and delightedly savor His promises and oaths (6:13-18). This is the how (the means) of confident hope, but what is the why (the substance) of confident hope? Jesus Christ Himself. And, specifically this morning, Jesus as our eternal priest. Now we are ready to learn something about Him via Melchizedek! 1. Jesus Christ, our Anchor in glory, 6:19-20 2. Jesus Christ, our King of Righteousness and King of Peace, 7:1-2 3. Jesus Christ, our Forever Priest, 7:3 4. Jesus Christ, the greatest possible priest a. Abraham’s Mediator, 7:4, 6a b. Levi’s—and every Levitical priest’s—Mediator, 7:5, 9-10 c. Abraham’s Bless-er, 7:6b-7 d. The resurrected, New Testament High Priest, v8 Conclusion: What cause you have for confidence, if you cling to Jesus Christ! So cling to Him, and have that confidence, and let your heart gush forth with His praise!
