Justification is by faith alone. God made a covenant with Abraham; Abraham must simply believe God's promise. The law came 430 years later, which was based on works. The law cannot change the promise God gave to Abraham. They are incompatible because the concepts of law and promise are mutually exclusive. The law is meant to point us away from itself and away from ourselves. It is meant to point us to Jesus Christ, who is the only way to be made right with God - through faith in the promise.
