This passage follows one of Israel's laments over her sins and a graphic description of God's sword of vengeance on sinners. Then it tells of God's never-failing grace to his people, supremely seen historically in the Exodus, but also in times that Yahweh intervened to rescue his people. Beginning at the burning bush we that it was Yahweh himself who came down to rescue his people. Throughout the OT the Word of God was the One who manifested himself to his people. This was seen principally in the incarnation of our Lord Jesus - the Son of God who came among us and through his presence on earth became the Redeemer of God's people. Though Christ died, resurrected and ascended, he is still present by the Holy Spirit in his people. And when Christ returns he will be among his people in his glorified physical body to accomplish their final deliverance from sin, death, and hell.
