Communion is to emphasize the significance of the death of Christ. The reason behind the the observation, and purpose it is to serve, makes it a very serious matter. To imply that it has meaning the Scripture doesn't attribute to it or to conduct oneself in a selfish and disrespectful manner is to regard Christ and His death with an unworthy attitude. Paul is writing to correct such an attitude and the resulting ungodly behavior by the Corinthians. He further addresses the seriousness of it by pointing out the severity of discipline the Lord has brought upon them.
Such stern rebukes should be a strong warning to us to examine ourselves and make sure we are partaking of the Communion service and doing so in a manner acceptable to the Lord.
