    “ Summary, Part 3 (final) ”
III. WE SHOULD THANK GOD FOR BLESSINGS AS MEMBERS OF A BIBLICAL LOCAL CHURCH. A Christian knows that everything comes to him from the hand of God. A. WE SHOULD THANK GOD FOR SHARED PEACE, UNITY, INSTRUCTION, AND ADMONITION. COLOSSIANS 3:15-16: we are called into one body so that the peace of Christ rules in our hearts. B. WE SHOULD THANK GOD FOR OUR BRETHREN’S GENEROSITY TO US IN NEED (2 CORINTHIANS 9:12). The first century church was generally poor. ACTS 4:32-37: they were generous in giving to the church, and to other churches they didn’t even know (cf. 2 CORINTHIANS 8-9). 2 CORINTHIANS 9:12: the thanksgiving is not just horizontal, but vertical. 2 CORINTHIANS 9:15: “Blessed be God for His unspeakable gift.” C. WE SHOULD THANK GOD FOR THEIR ENCOURAGEMENT IN OUR TIMES OF TRIAL. Paul was human. He was weak and trembling as he arrived at Corinth. By the end of his ministry, he was lonely and discouraged. ACTS 28:15: he thanks God when he first sees the believers. We should be thankful for the Christians who cross our paths: God sends them to encourage us.

    “ Summary, Part 2 ”
    C. WE SHOULD THANK GOD FOR HIS HEART-CHEERING PROMISES. PROVERBS 19:21: our plans are not supreme; we should find the peace in the fact that God’s are supreme. 2 PETER 1:4: we should look to the future in hope. 2 CORINTHIANS 1:20, ROMANS 8:30: God’s promises for us are established. ISAIAH 25:1: God has been faithful in fulfilling His promises, and will always be so. II. WE SHOULD THANK GOD FOR THE INESTIMABLE BLESSING OF SALVATION. A. WE SHOULD THANK GOD FOR SAVING US. ISAIAH 12:1-2: God’s grace is free to us, but not to Him. He gave us His Son to save is. The economy of God’s righteousness demands justice. Though Christians deserve it in full, God gave it to Christ on our behalf. B. WE SHOULD THANK GOD FOR SAVING OTHERS, EVEN THOSE WE MAY NOT KNOW (2 THESSALONIANS 2:13). 1 THESSALONIANS 1:9: They worshipped idols and demons, yet God saved them. COLOSSIANS 1:3: We show thanks to God for saving others by praying for them. ROMANS 6:17: Paul hadn’t been to Rome yet, but knew things about the Christians there because God had saved them. God’s power is the same everywhere. C. WE SHOULD THANK GOD FOR THE WONDERFUL PRIVILEGE OF SERVING HIM WHO SAVED US. 1 TIMOTHY 1:12-16: He is our strength, our ambassador to the lost.

    “ Summary, Part 1 ”
PSALM 92:1-2 says that it is good for us to give thanks to God, not just that He does. JEREMIAH 17:26: a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord; gratitude should suffuse all our worship. Two things about sacrifices: they must be appointed, and they must be offered in a spirit of gratitude. HEBREWS 13:15: our words are hollow if they don’t come from our hearts. 1 PETER 2:5, 9-10: Peter is writing to Christians sitting the pews: a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, to proclaim God’s excellency. It is God’s will for us to give thanks in all things. I. We should thank God for who He is. Gratitude should be our native language. A. WE SHOULD THANK GOD FOR HIS GLORIOUS ATTRIBUTES: His character qualities. They are without deficiency. PSALM 54:6: God’s “Name” stands for who He is. When we think of a person, we don’t just think of the sign indicating him (his name); we think of the person. B. WE SHOULD THANK GOD FOR HIS GRACIOUS WORKS. PSALM 107:8: “lovingkindness” is God’s loyal covenant love for His redeemed people. Even just waking up, we know that God has kept us through our sleep. If God even keeps the wicked in this way, imagine how much more He keeps His people. ROMANS 2:4: sinners receive blessings so that they come to repentance.
