The Jewish people were just trying to kill Paul and to understand what was going on, the Roman commander set him in the midst of the Sanhedrin. They appear to be a very angry people as Paul states that he has lived before God with a good conscience until this day and because of that the high priests calls for him to be beaten on the mouth. Paul responds pointing out their lawlessness. At which point, they accuse him of breaking the law because he insulted the high priest. As the conversation continues, Paul sees an opportunity to split the rival religious parties, the Sadducees and the Pharisees. He states that he is being accused because of the hope and resurrection of the dead, which the Pharisees embrace and the Sadducees deny. This creates much contention among the Sanhedrin so the commanders commands soldiers to rescue him to prevent him from being torn to pieces. As God turns the Jews over to a debased mind, we see the anger, hatred and violence that is now exemplifies their actions. The elites, the Sanhedrin, exhibit no greater self-control than the Jewish mob that was beating Paul the day before. Make no friendship with an angry man and with a furious man do not go lest you learn his ways and set a snare for your soul (Proverbs 22:24-25).
