What is being described for us here in the verses that I just read to you are the most dreadful and horrible consequences that can possibly be imagined; the consequences and judgment of being cast into hell; that place of eternal and everlasting torment. Jesus is saying that we must do everything in our power to avoid going to hell. It is our Lord Jesus who is telling us that these awful consequences will come when any person refuses to deal very decisively with their sins; especially their besetting sins, those sinful habits of soul and body that want to continue on in us, working death in us, after we come to Christ. Jesus is saying that a person must not allow them to continue on. He is saying that for a person to avoid these dreadful consequences of what it will mean to go to hell, it may mean our having to cut off members of our body that are very dear to us. What does He mean when He says this? I believe that what He means is that you and I, as believers must be willing and ready to become spiritual surgeons, performing spiritual operations upon our heart and our body, when sin threatens to entrench itself in our lives. Do you see yourself as a spiritual surgeon this morning? I know that to become a skillful spiritual surgeon that you will need Jesus' instruction explained to you.
