It is possible for us to have assurance of salvation. Ours is not a “hope so” salvation, but a “know so” salvation! K, n, o, w spells “got it!”
We are saved by faith in Jesus. For the last five chapters John has told us what it looks like to truly believe in Jesus. True saving faith will impact us in certain positive ways: we will walk in the light (1:7), we will keep his commandments (2:3), we will purify ourselves (3:2-3), we will not practice sin (3:9), and we will love the brothers (3:14, 4:16).
Those who have a faith in Jesus that moves them to love the brethren can have full assurance.
