A major blessing of the Reformation was the recovery of the doctrine of assurance. The Roman Catholic Church denied that one can have assurance, keeping people dependent upon their contrived economic system of transactional grace. The Reformers rightly understood that our assurance is based upon God's sovereignty and integrity, not the frailty of human determination and the feeble efforts of men. However, the experience of that assurance requires minds renewed upon God's Word so that our total trust rests with the saving work of Christ.
