An established fact in Judaism was that God was "good to Israel. " And so the real question was/is if God is good, then why do bad things occur? Why does He allow bareness? Why He is so harsh on His people?
Is this because God sleeps? Perhaps He is incapable of providing for our welfare — is He bound? Like the gods of the nations, maybe God is limited by some other god?
In light of these questions, it is no wonder Hannah was most grateful for the fact that her God being good also was sovereign!
