The name for the book of Deuteronomy comes from the Greek translation of the OT and means Second Law. Peter in 2 Peter 3:1 makes mention that this letter is his Second Letter or Epistle to them. One commentator has pointed out some of the similarities between 2 Peter and the book of Deuteronomy. Moses preached the sermons in Deuteronomy to a generation that had not directly seen all the signs and wonders that God had done in Egypt. This new generation did not see the glory and power of God displayed at Mt. Sinai. Moses knew that he would not enter into the Promised Land but that soon he would die. Peter also was writing shortly before his death to a people that had not seen all the signs and wonders that Jesus did in His ministry. They had of course not been present when the glory and power of Christ were displayed on the holy mountain at the Transfiguration. Deuteronomy was given to prepare the second generation to take their inheritance in the Promised Land. And in a somewhat similar way, Peter wrote this second letter at the end of the apostolic age, so that his readers would also faithfully endure the many hardships they would face as they also took their inheritance. First, the purpose of this letter in verses 12-15, and second, the first proof of this letter in verses 16-18.
