In this morning's sermon we considered how our lawlessness was imputed to Jesus Christ so that all our transgressions may be washed away by the blood of Christ. But this is only a part of our verse and it is only one part of the story. Our sinfulness consists not only of our actual transgressions against God's Law, but also of our absence of any original righteousness in positively fulfilling that Law. By His death Jesus has made atonement for our transgressions of God's Law. But by His sinless life lived as the Son of Man He has made a perfect provision for our absence of righteousness. This righteousness is not obtained by the keeping of the Law, but by bare simple faith in Him who justifies the ungodly. To everyone who believes into Jesus Christ, His perfect righteousness is imputed to them so that they become the righteousness of God in Him.
