Jesus the Messiah literally historically and physically suffered died buried and raised the third day from the body in an incorruptible immortal body bearing his scars. This occurred outside of us in time and space history. The belief in these facts is central to the Christians. We connect with what he did for God's chosen by faith in him expressed in our baptism. Paul says of immersion /baptism that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death. Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father so we too may walk in a new way of life. So we are raised with Christ Jesus now. We are in a new state before God of justified because Christ Jesus paid our sin debt in full in his death and he was raised up for our justification. (Rom 4:25) These verses connect Jesus suffering and death and resurrection to our baptism in water and the resultant life of discipleship. This passage connect three things closely, Jesus' resurrection, our baptism and our Christian life. Baptism is primarily about Jesus person and actions on our behalf with our identification with him in baptism by faith. These two realities are essential for Christian life. Baptism is not primarily about us and our experience but about God's actions on our behalf and secondarily a testimonial of our conversion. How we live the life in Christ is impacted by these realities. Through our personal repentance from sin and our faith in Jesus Christ we have experienced the new birth. We are sons and daughters of God who have died to our sin and raised to new life. We live this life from this reality.
