Eliphaz, trying to teach Job, appeals to ancient wisdom and his own vast experience to argue that Job has abandoned the way of wisdom. This "way" teaches that obedience brings blessing and disobedience brings suffering. Therefore, Job is suffering because he sinned, and God is punishing him. The solution? Repent, and the good life will return. While it is true that Job is a sinner, it is false that Job is suffering because of sin. Rather than boosting Job's faith, Eliphaz' advice would turn him away from God, Job's true source of comfort.
