C. David's Experience with God's Help (Psalm 3:3-5)
1. David's defender in battle (Psalm 3:3) "the lifter up of mine head" Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. 2. David's refuge in time of need (Psalm 3:4); • Could be a general statement of praise concerning God hearing and answering prayer • Or could be regarding a particular prayer of David. • It certainly seems like a turning point for David, both in mind and in victory. For example, David's counsellor (Ahithophel) betrayed him by siding with the rebellion. (2 Samuel 15:12, 31).
a. Ahithophel's counsel was known for its superiority and was said to be "as if a man had inquired at the oracle of God" (2 Samuel 16:23). b. On his way out of town David said, "O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness" (2 Samuel 15:31). c. Sometimes answers to prayer begin immediately. His paths crossed with Hushai, the Archite (2 Samuel 15:32-34). • David's burden becomes a great blessing • God works out David's dilemma after prayer while David was worshipping God.
d. Hushai, at David's request, made himself available to Absalom (2 Samuel 16:15-19). e. Hushai will be instrumental in defeating the counsel of Ahithophel (2 Samuel 17:1-14). f. Hushai sent word to David to keep him safe (2 Samuel 17:15-22). g. Ahitophel's counsel was turned into foolishness and ended (2 Samuel 17:23) 3. David's sustainer in sleep (Psalm 3:5)
