How many people, despite their claim of belonging to God, live a life that is not pleasing in His eyes.
Despite being God's covenant people, the Jews in Haggai were in their unbelief busying themselves with the pleasues of this world while God's Temple, the emblem of His abiding presence, lay barren.
They, like us, had their excuses. Indeed, some of them even seemed plausible. But in the eyes of omniscience, they were empty and awaiting God's divine chastisement.
We especially in 21st century churchianity would do well to heed to Haggai's message to God's people.
Let us wake up, for God's blessing will never abide upon a lazy and disobedient people. Let us, with Israel, consider our paths. What are we doing in light of eternity? Is it pleasing to God? Is it worthy of the name of Christ?
The church needs to wake up and get out of the world and back into the will of God.
