Judges sketches the period from the Conquest to the Monarchy when God was not recognized in Israel and every man did what was right in his own eyes. The Levites failed to teach the Bible with the result that the tribes failed. Despite the Canaanization of Israel God was gracious to raise up War-Lords/Judges to deliver them from oppression. The book gradually paves the way for the Davidic dynasty and King. Ruth is a necessary corollary study.
