We turn into 2 Peter. If you notice coming in, there's a funeral going on across the highway. If y'all knew Sonny Emory, he passed away. They're having his funeral. So pray for the Emory family during this time of their loss. 2 Peter. I've noticed that a lot of our sermons here lately, they all kind of fit together. Matter of fact, my son was sitting back there, my youngest son, and he said his little girl tapped him on the shoulder this morning when Patrick was preaching and says, Daddy, that's the sermon we heard last Sunday morning. And to think that the preacher in Tishomingo, well, not Tishomingo, Midway, up there at Providence, done the same sermon on, who was it? Jonah. You get this old tribe, remember all this, that the Lord gave the same thing to Patrick. But I have heard that time and time again, that I'd hear a sermon here at this church and mention it at work, and they said, well, preacher so-and-so preached that sermon. And another said, well, I heard another preacher, and then God does that. He can give everybody the same sermon, trying to get a message across to us. And all these lessons and messages we're having here lately, centers around dividing the Word of God rightly. And why do we need to do that? Well, Peter gives us an idea here in 2 Peter 2, verse one through three. Peter says, but there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privilege shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of, and through covetousness Shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you, whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. And so we see then that not only do we have false prophets and false teachers in our time, but even back in the Lord Jesus' time, there were false teachers and false prophets. Matter of fact, you can trace that all the way back before heaven and earth was created. Who was the first false teacher? Anybody wanna guess? Matter of fact, he deceived a third part of the angels in heaven, and they followed him in rebellion against God. And so Satan is the beginning of all this false teaching, and he is the one that's behind it. Turn to Jude chapter three. Jude verse three. There's no chapters there. Jude verse three. And Jude also talks about these false teachers. Jude verse three says, Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you and exhort you that you should earnestly contend for the faith. Now to contend means to fight for it, put up a struggle. And so we're to earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. Now verse four is what I want you to pay attention to. For there are certain men crept in unaware. A false teacher's not gonna come in and say, hey y'all, I'm gonna teach you a false doctrine. What's he do? He comes in and says, well, I've had a revelation where the Lord has spoke to me and told me this or that or something else. And so he comes in unaware. So that's why we need to be careful. So he comes in unaware. He says, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness and denying the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. And so we see then that we are warned that there's gonna be false teachers come among us. And so we have these counterfeit teachers coming in pretending to be something they're not. You know, the Bible says, for even Satan appears as an angel of light. And so his ministers will also come in as ministers of light. They'll come in under the guise of being a Christian, but they're really of the devil. And so how do you tell false doctrine? What do you compare it with? I'll put it that way. That's why the Bible says compare scripture with scripture. Now, if you do that, you've got to rightly divide it. You know, the Bible says that Judas went out and hung himself. That's scripture, isn't it? And then Jesus says, go ye and do likewise. Now is that rightly dividing the word of truth? So you've got to be careful cause Satan takes the verses of scripture out of context to try to deceive people into a false doctrine. And so we have these counterfeit teachers spreading erroneous doctrines. They're not real, they're not true. And then not only are there false teachers, there's false brethren. Turn to Galatians chapter two. Galatians chapter two, false brethren. And I'm sure you've known people that match this here, false brethren, because if you watch them long enough, the truth itself is gonna show through and you'll see them for what they are. Galatians chapter two, verse four says, and that because of false brethren, Again, unaware. Brought in, who came in privately to spy out our liberty, which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage. Of course, we know Paul was talking about the Judaizers that was trying to put those saved under grace back under the law. Coming in saying you have to be circumcised and keep the commandments to be saved. And so there's false brethren. And then there's false prophets. Turn to 1 John chapter four. False prophets. In other words, in our day and time, false preachers. Can any of you think of any false preachers? All you gotta do is turn on the TV and watch a while, you'll find one. In studying this and looking up a lot of things, I got online and looked up some things. and I put in false preachers. You'd be surprised at the preacher's picture and name that showed up, false preachers. They're everywhere because they're not preaching the gospel. 1 John chapter four, verse one, false prophets. John writes, beloved, believe not every spirit, But try the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know we the Spirit of God, every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come into flesh is of God. Is there any false teachers out there and false prophets teaching that Jesus didn't come into flesh? Well, they admit he was in the flesh, but they deny that he was God. Matter of fact, they say that he wasn't God at all. And so we see then that we see these false prophets. Turn to Jude again, verse eight. Verse eight. Still speaking of these false prophets and false teachers, Jude says, likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. Yet Michael, the dark angel, when contending with the devil, he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, the Lord rebuke thee. But these speak evil of those things which they know not, but what they know naturally, they have no spiritual knowledge. They are as brute beasts, and those things, they corrupt themselves. And then it goes on to some more verses there you might like to read about these false prophets. And so we see then that we have false teachers, we have false brethren, we have false doctrine. Turn to Hebrews chapter 13. False doctrine. Hebrews chapter 13. Gavin kind of covered some of this Wednesday night, false doctrines that are being taught. I told him after church, I said, you just about preached my sermon for me. But you know why the Lord repeats things over and over where we can learn? How did we learn in school? Repetition. And so God continually repeats these things that we can learn these things. Hebrews 13 verse nine. And I'm of the opinion that Paul wrote this. Now, you don't take that as a fact, but that's my opinion and a lot of other people agree with it. But anyway, Hebrews 13 now says, be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. And this day and time you can hear just about anything as a doctrine. And they try to pass it off as what the Bible says. I've heard a lot of verses, people tell you that. you can't find in the Bible. I'm sure you all have run across that too. Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines, for it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace, not with meats, which have not profited them and have been occupied therein. So all they're concerned about is the physical things of the body, and they're not concerned about the spiritual things. So we got to be careful about strange and false doctrines that we hear. Back to Jude verse four, Let's look at that verse and break it down just a little bit. He says, for there are certain men crept in unaware. What does it mean to be unaware? You don't know. They come in secretly. They don't come in and proclaim themselves. They come in that they're some great spiritual person, but he says they're ungodly. Now, what does it mean to be ungodly? They crept in unaware. before ordained to this condemnation ungodly man. What does it mean to be ungodly? That's what we were before we got saved. Without God. God wasn't directing our life. God wasn't having an influence in our life. And so God is not in these false prophets. And so they're ungodly, without God. It says then that they, They turn the grace of God into lasciviousness. Now that's a big fancy word. And so I had to look up the definition of that. It means to be lustful. And so we think of the verses says the lust of the sins and the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. That's what Satan got in trouble with to begin with. That's the same thing he used on Eve in the garden. It's the same thing he tries to use on us today. the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. It's a lustful wantonness desire that's unrestrained. There's no restraint in these people. They have nothing to control or restrain them. Aren't you glad you got the Holy Spirit to restrain you and to keep this old flesh under subjection? Because without him, we'd be in a heap of trouble, wouldn't we? But that's not the worst part of it. Look at the last part of it there. and denying the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. They're denying who He is. They're denying that He's God in the flesh. They're denying that He's the Christ and the Savior. And I hear reading and listening to reports of our big denominational churches that many of them have turned away from even teaching or preaching Jesus. teaching a social gospel. I'll get it right in a minute. And so they've left Jesus plum out of it. I've seen several different things on Facebook about religion and things and my, my, they deny Jesus Christ all over the place. It's sad what's going on in our world today. So let's look at some of their teachings. Romans chapter three, verse 28. Romans chapter three, verse 28. Paul writes, therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. So Paul says, because we're in the age of grace, we no longer have to keep the law to be saved. We're saved by faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. But these denominations cheat works. You've got to keep the commandments. You've got to do this, and you've got to do that. And all it boils down to is legalism. Do you know what legalism is? Now, we that believe in eternal security called legalist because we stand for some things. We've got things that we say we shouldn't do as a Christian. And so they say because we say these things that we're legalist. But a legalism is a work that you do to obtain favor towards salvation. And so we're not legalist, we have standards because we're saved, not in order to be saved. And it all boils down to our standards is because we want to be a witness to the lost and dying world. And you can't be a witness if you're a drunk. You can't be a witness if you're known to be a liar. And on and on you can go. So we need to have a good testimony to be able to be a witness for the Lord Jesus Christ. And then look at Ephesians chapter two, eight and nine. Of course, we all know that one real well. Matter of fact, I'd probably just quote it, but I better read it and get it right. Ephesians chapter two, verse eight and nine. Matter of fact, we'll just throw in verse 10 too. Ephesians chapter two, verse eight, Paul says, for by grace, what is grace? Undeserved favor. Something we didn't deserve, something we didn't earn or work for, but it's God's grace. He says, for by grace are you saved, something we don't deserve, through faith. And so it takes faith to believe the gospel to be saved. And he says, and that's not of yourselves. It's nothing that we've done, but it's all that Christ done in our stead. And it's not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. God gives it to us because of our faith in Christ. Not of works least any man should boast. So is there works? included in it, not in salvation, but after salvation. Look at verse 10. For we are his workmanship, the Holy Spirit working in us, created in Christ Jesus unto good works. And so we're to have good works in our life as a testimony of what Christ has done for us, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. And so it's all of God. So we see then that this salvation by works is a false doctrine. Now it was okay under the law, but are you a Jew under the law today? If you are and you sin and you have to take your sacrifice to the temple to get forgiveness of sins, where are you gonna go? There is no temple. It wouldn't do no good to go to Jerusalem because the temple was torn down in AD 40. And so, AD 70, excuse me brother. AD 70. And so it would do no good to take a sacrifice over. The sacrifice was paid some 2000 years ago on the cross of Calvary. And so we see then that it's by grace, and not by works. And then you have salvation by baptism. Now, do any of y'all know the denomination that teaches that? I'm sure you do. Salvation by baptism. Look at 1 Peter 3. 1 Peter 3. Now, I couldn't get this straight for a long time, but the other night studying that, the Lord showed me the answer. And so I'm gonna share it with you. 1 Peter 3. Verse 21. Peter here speaking says, the like figure where unto even baptism doth also now save us, not to putting away the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. What's the answer? The figure. Baptism is a figure of what? the gospel, the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. So the salvation of baptism is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus that saves us by putting our faith in that and not being baptized in water Because all that is, it won't wash away sin, but it does what? Shows that you have a good conscience toward God. So we're not saved by baptism. Well, what about, and Gavin mentioned this, I think, speaking in tongues. Are you saved because you can speak in tongues? No. Look in 1 Corinthians chapter 14. 1 Corinthians chapter 14. Now all these things you need to study for yourself. Don't take my word for it. But you study your Bible and let the Holy Spirit show you the truth of these things. And so we come down to tongues. 1 Corinthians 14, 22. Here's what Paul writes about speaking in tongues. And when he talks about speaking in tongues, he's talking about speaking in a foreign language. Not what the tongues move it uses today. Wherefore tongues are for what? A sign. Not to them that believe, but to them that believe not. But prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. And now turn over to chapter 13 and verse eight. Paul says, charity never faileth. But whether there be prophecies, they shall fail. Whether there be tongues, they shall cease. Whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. And so Paul says tongues is gonna stop one of these days because it's no longer needed. It was assigned to who? The Jews. The Bible says the Jews require a sign. And so it was assigned to those Jews. Remember Peter going to the house of Cornelius? And the Holy Spirit fell on the house of Cornelius and they spoke in tongues to be a sign to those Jews that was with Peter that God would save Gentiles. And then we have the prosperity gospels. Now, what do I mean prosperity gospels? Name it and claim it and God will make you a millionaire if you'll send me $100 and all this kind of stuff. But that's not what the Bible teaches. Turn to John chapter 14. John chapter 14. Now we're going to have to make a division here because John chapter 14 is talking to the nation of Israel under the law. It's not talking to the church today under grace. There's a lot of promises to the nation of Israel that has been tried to be applied today to the church, the church of grace. of God and not under the law. So we need to realize that a lot of these things that were promises to Israel is not for the church today. And so we see John chapter 14, verse 13. John 14, 13. Now I've tried this and I'm wondering if you ever have and I never did get it to work. And whatsoever you shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You shall ask anything in my name, I will do it. Y'all ever tried that? Did you ever get it to work? That was to the Jews under law. That does not apply to the church today. Then you could think of, what is it? 2 Chronicles 7, 14. If my people, the nation of Israel, which is called by my name, the God of Israel, and they shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will forgive their sins and heal their land. That's to the nation of Israel. We cannot doctrinally apply that to us today. Now, should we pray for our nation? Should we turn from our sins? Yes. And we can be a witness for God and bring glory to his name. So we got to rightly divide what was to the nation of Israel and what is for the church today. And so this prosperity gospel is not something that you can name and claim just because God said if you ask it, I'll do it. That doesn't apply to us today. And then Gavin also looked on this, lose your salvation. Now I was raised in the general Baptist, which is the same thing as free will. And I was taught you could lose your salvation. And so I always believed it, not because I knew the Bible, not because somebody had showed me in the Bible, but natural reasoning just made that make sense to me. But when I got to Emmanuel Baptist Church and started studying the Bible and growing spiritually and learning things, I found out that it's all about what Jesus done and we don't have anything to do with it. And so we can't lose it. Turn to Hebrews chapter six. Gavin stopped one verse short when he read it the other night. blaming him, he was trying to make a point. But there's something there that I want you to see. Hebrews 11, wait a minute, Hebrews 6. I'll get it right in a minute, hold on. Hebrews 6. And you got to remember now, this was written to Hebrews that had gotten saved while the law was still in, Still going on, they're still having the sacrifices and all that during this time. So we got to consider that. But Hebrews chapter six, verse four says, For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the world to come, if they shall fall away to renew them again under repentance, seeing they what? Crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. What are they saying? Or what is he saying there? If you can lose your salvation, Jesus is gonna have to come and die again for you to get saved again. You ever stop and think of that? If his blood didn't take care of all sin, and you can lose your salvation, he's gonna have to come back and die again to pay for those sins that sent you to hell. But my Bible says that he paid for the sins of the whole world. And so when we put our faith in him, we are justified, just as if we have never sinned. So we see then that to lose our salvation in this age of grace is an erroneous teaching. And then we have Calvinism. Now, what is Calvinism? That's what they call reformed theology. That's where a bunch of theologians got together and think they know more than God. And as Peter said over there in 2 Peter 3, 15 through 18, they wrestle the scriptures, they twist them to make them say what they wanted to say and not necessarily what it's saying. That's why we need the discernment of the Holy Spirit to understand the scriptures. And so they say everybody is predestined. Turn to Romans chapter eight, verse 29. They are big on predestination. But what they leave out of predestination is God's foreknowledge. And so we got to realize that God knows the beginning from the end. He knows everything that's going to happen. And so He knows who's going to be saved and who's not. And it's not predestined, but it's a foreknowledge of God that He knows who's going to be saved. And who won't? Romans 8, 29. Of course, we all know Romans 8, 28. Might as well read that while we're at it. Romans 8, 28. For we know by the scripture, by the teaching of God's word, that all things work together for good to them that love God. Aren't you glad? to them who are the called according to his purpose. Now verse 29, for whom he did foreknow. That's that knowledge that God has the beginning from the end. He knows everything. He knew that June the 23rd, 1961, a little boy named Bill was gonna get saved. He knew that before the foundation of the world. He didn't predetermine that I was gonna get saved, but he knew that I would. And so it says he did foreknow. Those he did foreknow, he also did predestinate. Now those he knew would get saved, he predetermined that something's gonna happen to them. And what is that? To be conformed to the image of his son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Am I the image of Christ? I need to be, but I won't be in the image of Christ until one day, as David said, one day I'll see him as he is, because I shall be like him. I'm awaiting for that day, how about you? And so we see then Calvinism, this reformed theology is also erroneous doctrine. Then there's those that say hell's not real. My, my, how can you read the Bible and believe that, that hell's not real? Turn to Revelation. Turn to Revelation chapter 20. Revelation chapter 20. I tell you what, some of these people that believe some of these things, I wonder about them. I wonder where their reasoning and knowledge comes from, because it sure doesn't come from the Bible. Revelation chapter 20 verse 13. Now this is John the Apostle talking. He says, the sea gave up the dead which were in it. Death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them. So there must be a hell. And they were judged every man according to their works and death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Not only is there a hell, but that's not the end of it. One of these days, if your name's not written in that book of life by putting your faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus as your Savior, you're gonna be cast into a lake of fire. You're gonna be taken out of hell and cast into the lake of fire. That's the second death. Isn't it sad that people believe that there's no hell? And then there are those that teach it, Well, I mentioned that, didn't I? Jesus is not God, but Him and Lucifer are brothers. Now, this is a big denomination in our country. It's a big, powerful denomination, and they actually believe that Jesus and Lucifer, both of them, were created beings, and Jesus is not God Himself in the flesh. And these people believe these things. They're deceived. Any of you think of a verse of scripture that tells you how they're deceived? Turn to 2 Corinthians chapter four. 2 Corinthians chapter four. They're deceived by the devil. And so that's why we need to know what the Bible says. That's why we need to study the Bible so we will not be deceived by Satan. 2 Corinthians chapter four verse three says, but if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost. Before you got saved, did you understand and believe the gospel? I had no clue. I didn't know a thing about all that stuff until I got under conviction and the Holy Spirit illuminated my mind and I could understand the gospel. Then I realized I was a sinner and got saved. Verse four says, in whom the God of this world, that's a little g God, that's Satan, hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. And so we see then it takes the gospel of Jesus Christ to illuminate that mind, a person can realize they're lost and need to be saved. Let's stand to have a
