People would like to think that we can exercise some sort of influence over our eternal destination. Whether through denial of God's judgment, hoping our good outweighs our evil, denial of eternal punishment, or any other thing that reminds us that the Creator everything is going to be the judge of everyone.
The end of this life (death) is not the end of everything. There will be two resurrections. Those who are part of the first resurrection will be equipped for eternal life with Jesus in a new heaven and earth.
Those who are part of the second resurrection, will also be equipped for eternal life. Only, their life will be spent in the place of darkness, isolation, suffering, weeping, gnashing of teeth, etc. Their suffering will go on every day for the rest of forever and ever.
There is a way to be transferred from the latter to the former...that is through yielding our life to the One who created us and whose death has paid the price for our redemption and salvation, saving us from the wrath that is to come and from the great white throne of judgment.
