God gives His own perfect righteousness, to those who are utterly destitute without it, in Christ alone
Introduction: How good is the righteousness revealed in the gospel?
1. Glorious Righteousness
1.a. God's wrath revealed against all unrighteousness in pushing down on truth about Him, neither glorifying Him nor giving thanks.
1.b. The righteousness of which we had fallen short is the righteousness that is given in the gospel. Of course there is no difference, then. Each believer has righteousness that attains to the glory of God!
1.b.i. We could never contribute to or add to this righteousness
1.b.ii. There can be no difference between believers' righteous standing
2. Free Righteousness
2.a. Freely. We contribute nothing
2.b. Grace (cf. 4:4, 11:6). He contributes everything: blessing for those who deserve only curse; strength for those who have only weakness; life in those who have only death; goodness for those who only have sinfulness
3. Costly Righteousness
3.a. Incarnation
3.b. That in a low condition
3.c. Death. Bought with His own blood. Incomprehensible price.
3.d. Curse
4. Personal Righteousness
4.a. Not an abstraction or quantity that we obtain from Jesus, but Jesus Himself.
4.b. It's all about a person. The gospel of God, concerning His Son. Whenever we are in spiritual trouble, the answer is a Person.
Conclusion: Let us not be ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God for salvation. The glory of God for salvation. The grace of God for salvation. The redemption by God for salvation. God Himself for salvation.
