through verse number, well I'll read down through verse number 11. Romans chapter 5 verse number 9 through verse number 11 and pray the Lord will just help us and speak to our hearts. Thankful for upbringing that the Lord gave me. My family wasn't what it ought to have been all the way back but at least they taught me some principles. Sometimes you may not be able to teach all the spiritual things you need, but if you can teach some good work ethic, good principles, that'll go a long way. That's character and responsibility. That's needed. It's needed. So you do what you know to do at the time and what you can do as far as what's right. And that helps out. That helps out. God can take that and use that. So I pray the Lord will speak to our heart. Romans chapter 5, verse number 9 through verse number 11. Romans chapter 5 verse number 9, Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. Let's pray. Thank you for the words that's been said. Thank you for your goodness to us. I pray you'll forgive me where I've sinned against you. I pray you'd speak to my heart today, our hearts today, and we'll thank you for what you do. Help us to uplift you that you might be, might draw all men unto yourself. And we'll thank you for what you do. I, I pray that you'd cause every demon of hell to move aside. Pray you'd make our hearts soft, make them tender, make them receptive to, toward you. and we'll thank you for what you do. Thank you for truth, help us embrace it, help us to preach it, help us to practice it, and we'll thank you for all you do. Meet with us today, manifest yourself to some soul, save somebody today, and thank you for your goodness to us, for we ask it in Jesus' name, for his sake we pray, amen. You may be seated. We've been dealing with the principle of salvation in this section of the book of Romans and of course Paul as he laid down the first part of Romans he dealt with the principle of sin showing that every man is guilty before God and the law was good in the sense that it backed man in the corner letting him know that he needs a Savior, he needs a way out and a way in and of course that's the door, the Lord Jesus Christ. Then as he begins to unfold the principle of salvation he also begins to show us that that the fact is that it's not by rights, it's not, and I'm talking about some ordinances or rights or rules or regulations, law or works, but it's by, of course, grace through faith that we have, and of course He gave us that of the royal family, the royal family of David, how He practiced it by faith, also that of the family of Abraham who's the head of the Hebrew nation, how he was justified by faith, and so He, He lets us know it's by grace through faith. Then in chapter 5, He starts out with therefore, meaning give us a, in view of the fact that we're saved by grace and grace alone, that we have some results of being saved or the results of being justified. you see when we talk about salvation we're talking about justification, that's where the Spirit is saved from the penalty of sin and so as a result there's some results listed here and we've dealt with the fact that we're, we have peace with God. We are, we can, we have access by grace, by faith into the grace wherein we stand. That's by faith in His blood, still it's by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. We also glory in And well, we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God and we are to glory in a tribulation that he spoke about. And then the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost, which is given unto us. And then, of course, we dealt last week with the fact that we're saved from the wrath through him. In other words, all wrath, we're saved from all wrath. And so you pray that God would just help us to see that, that we'll not suffer any wrath of God. We may hurt, we may have some problems in this life, but we're saved from all wrath. God's saints will never experience any of the wrath of God, not any here or out yonder in the wrath that it's talking about the lake of fire in the future. But now notice verse number 11, as he comes down to the seventh the result of justification that we have and he said and not only so but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ the word not only so really lets us know that all the other benefits we have of justification that we've just mentioned those six But we also have the seventh benefit, and that is joy. Joy, I think we teach our kids to tell downstairs and everywhere else usually there's a song that says you spell it J-O-Y, Jesus first, others second, and yourself last. That's involved in that. But joy, joy is the result of justification. But again here, God defined it in His Word in verse number 11. I think it's redefined again here in verse number 11 when He said, And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. Now you notice He said that joy is in God. It's not in things, it's not in hobbies, it's not in, it's not in these things that are temporal. You know sometimes we joy in this and joy in that, don't we? And it's all right to have some enjoyment in things, but that's not where the real joy comes from that he's talking about. We joy in God. Now you notice that's through our Lord Jesus Christ because he said, by whom, by whom we now have received the atonement. In other words, meaning by, by Jesus and that means not only by whom, but through whom. In other words, he's the channel through which all joy comes. And of course you notice we, the we is writing for those who've been justified, those who've been saved. But now he said we now, have now received. That means at the present time, not in the future. You see, somebody used to say, well, and we think sometimes in the sweet by and by, but we need something in the nasty now and now. In other words, and we have that. Even in the midst of tribulation, in the midst of all the circumstances not being right, he said we can have joy now, not just in the future. For the nasty now and now is what it means. And how do we do that? through our Lord Jesus Christ by whom we have now received the atonement. Now the word atonement, the Greek word behind that word, it means at one It means making two separated parties becoming one. That's dealing with the fact of having peace with God. And a better word in our English language today would be reconciliation. In fact, the business, that's what it means to be reconciled. It means just what we said that the word means, the Greek word means, making two separate parties one. And of course we've dealt with that in a sense in making peace with God. but this is the only time in the New Testament that this English word atonement is used. It's usually reserved for the Old Testament in the English Bible where it means it involves the sacrifices of animals and by the way it really means covering one year at a time, one year at a time. That's what it, because they had to re-offer those sacrifices again and again the blood of those animals was carried by the high priest one day a year on what's called the Day of Atonement into the Holy of Holies and sprinkled that upon the mercy seat where the cherubims overshadowed that mercy seat and the Ark of the Covenant and that was to appease God and in other words if God accepted those sacrifices There was no judgment, but there was mercy offered to sinful man who was separated from God that he might be reconciled to God through the channel of the blood sacrifice. And of course, it's not the Old Testament type, but Jesus is that sacrifice. His blood sacrifice was accepted by God as He sprinkled it on the mercy seat in heaven. And in sinful man, in other words, the mercy was extended to sinful man if he comes God's way. Now you can't come by law, you can't come by works, you can't come by rights or rules and regulations. You've got to come by faith in His blood and that takes the work of God to bring you there. And then when you come that way and exercise that faith, it's because God's granted you faith. Exercise repentance because God's granted you repentance. then that person is reconciled, or he's made one with God, who was separated from Him because of his enmity. I mentioned this morning about being an enemy. Enemy is one who has enmity, hostility toward someone. And so therefore, we are who are in Christ, we are in Christ who is God. This means that if you have come God's way, that you're saved or you're justified, a justification has taken place in your dead spirit. It's been quickened into life. And you can say if that's occurred to you, I, I now stand in a just position before God. In other words, not on what I've done, but because of what He has finished, because of the finished work of Jesus Christ, my Lord on the cross of Calvary, and because of a finished work of the Holy ghost of God in my life that brought me to that place. Therefore all saved can enjoy the benefits or the results of justification. That's all that we've mentioned. We have peace with God. We've got access by grace through faith. We can rejoice in the hope, the expectation we have. We can glory in tribulation and we are saved from the wrath, but thank God we can have joy. Now the word for joy in the Greek is the same word that already translated two times in chapter number 5. In verse number 2 it's translated rejoice, rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. So these are connected, these results. There's rejoicing or joy in the glory of God. Verse number 3 said we can glory in tribulation. That word glory is the same word that's translated, the same base word that's translated for joy, give a shout of triumph, give victory. And there's other Greek words in the Hebrew, Hebrew words and Greek words that are synonyms and similar to these words that's here in chapter 5, but basically they're translated joy, they're translated rejoice, they're translated praise, they're translated glory. So therefore, we can realize that all throughout the Bible there's many verses that deal with joy in that sense. In fact, there seems to be as many scriptures and references to the principle of joy in a believer as there are any other doctrine, maybe more dealing with that. So that seems to say to me that the doctrine or the principle of joy is an important doctrine, the result of justification. Now our forefathers, I've heard them talk about it, even in the early years at Norfolk Baptist Church where I grew up, talked about they used to enjoy their salvation And now we endure our religion. Hmm. Now, I'm not talking about I know sometimes I listen to some some singing on the radio. I was tuning in the WSOF coming down and some of that is so hollow that rejoicing in the background is hollow like hitting an empty drum. Amen. nothing wrong with rejoicing about that and just praise Him because I just rejoiced before the Lord but some of it is so empty but I've heard about, tell about our forefathers and that meant our foremothers if you please rejoicing over the things of God and in other words in Norfolk Baptist Church where I grew up where you couldn't even get a holy ground out of anybody when I grew up, amen. So our forefathers enjoyed their salvation while we endure our religion. We look like sometimes like, we're like the old donkey, got the old long face, like we've been drinking milk out of a churn, like we've eaten sour pickles for dinner, amen. and going to eat some more from supper, you know. We don't have, I'm so happy in the Lord, you know, I'm so full of joy, you know. And we can't even grin. Hadn't even got a grin. Did you know it takes more energy to frown than it does to grin? It's a proven scientific fact. It takes less energy out of you to smile. So smile. Somebody said, tell your face you're happy. Amen. Well, but yet this is joy that we can have in the midst of everything. So you see joy has a meaning of something deep settled on the inside. also carries a meaning of the outward manifestation of what's on the inside. So we've been, we are being cheated out of something in our churches today that quenches the Spirit of God so that there, that He's not operating in the capacity He wants to operate because we are not, and I'm not talking about jumping pews and swinging from the chandelier. I'm just saying to have a little joy expressed on our faces. The psalmist or the scripture says, Psalm 107, verse two, let the redeemed of the earth say so, amen. And our problem, I know many are not redeemed, I understand that, but oh, may God put it in their heart that that's what we want and say that's what I want. Psalm 150, verse number six, said let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. I'll never forget being at Myrtle, Mississippi the first time, this big old guy singing ship ahoy, I'd never heard anything like it. And he said, the Bible said, let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. And he said, if you can't praise God, quit breathing. And remember, these words are connected to the word joy in that sense. And Jesus told the disciples in Luke chapter 10, verse 20, they were rejoicing over the fact they'd had victory over the devil. And he said, rejoice because your name's written in heaven, because it's been permittized, because it's been laminated by the blood. In other words, not only so, but we also joy in the, through, in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ because we've been reconciled, because we've been, we've received, received the atonement made one in Christ, in other words. Now the Bible has much to say about glory and praise and joy. Psalm 511, he said, let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice. Let them ever shout for joy because thou defendest them. Let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. Verse, that's the one, verse Thessalonians 5, 16, he said, Rejoice evermore. Psalm 51, verse 15, he said, O LORD, open thou my lips, and my mouth shall show forth thy praise. Hebrews 13, 15, he said, By him therefore let us, let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. Psalm 146 verse 2, he said, While I live will I praise the Lord, I will sing praises unto my God while I have my being. 40 verse number 1 through 3, the psalmist David, I believe, his salvation experience, but he said, I waited patiently for the Lord. He inclined unto me. He came where I was, and he heard my cry. He brought me up also out of the horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God. Many shall see it, and shall fear, and shall trust in the Lord. Hebrews 2.12, he said, I'll declare thy name unto my brethren. In the midst of the church will I sing unto them. He said he'll sing unto them. Joy will cause you to testify and to sing. Psalm 61 verse number 8, he said, So will I sing praise unto thy name forever, that I may daily perform my vows. May I do what I say. So I'll just praise, sing praise unto thy name. Psalm 109 verse 30, I'll greatly praise the Lord with my mouth, yea, I will praise him among the multitude. That means in the congregation as well. Psalms 111 verse 1, I'll praise the Lord with my whole heart. Psalms 102 verse 18 said, This shall be written for the generation to come, and the people which shall be created shall praise the Lord. Well, what does it mean, shall be created? What does the Bible say in II Corinthians 5, 17? He said, Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he's a new creature. In other words, he shall be created, but shall be justified. All things are passed away. Behold, all things become new. So he said, in other words, he's talking about the fact that they which shall be created shall praise the Lord. They which shall be saved. shall praise the Lord. Psalm 139, verse 14, said, I'll praise thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm, Romans 5, 2, he said, Glory in tribulation. Matthew chapter 5, verse 11 and 12, Blessed are ye when men shall revile you. and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Luke chapter 6, verse 23, He said, Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy. Luke 19, 37, and said, When he is come nigh, even now at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works which they had seen. And when he come in on that white donkey, that foal of a donkey, I'll tell you, they rejoiced and they said, Keep them quiet, quiet them down. They ought not to be having any joy. He said, listen, if I caused them to hush, the stones and the rocks would cry out and rejoice, amen. So sometimes if you don't cry out and rejoice, these empty pews might get to crying out and then you would get scared, amen. you would. Well, I don't, you know what I'm saying, and I'm not talking about carrying it beyond to an extreme. I'm talking about like we did this morning in a sense, just being thankful for what the Lord has done for us, and that's involved in our joy. Revelations 19, 5, he said, A voice came out of the throne saying, And this is a command, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. First Corinthians 10, 31, he said, Whether therefore ye eat or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. And Psalm 150, he said, Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in His sanctuary. Praise Him in the firmament of His power. Praise Him for His mighty acts. Praise Him according to His excellent greatness. Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet. Praise Him with the psaltery and harp. Praise Him with the timbrel and dance. Praise Him with the stringed instrument and organs. Praise Him upon the loud cymbals. Praise Him upon the high-sounding cymbals. And then He said, Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord, and then he said, Praise ye the Lord. So we see over and over, Scripture tells us, and there's many, many more that deal with praise and joy and glory, if you please. Psalms 107 verse 8, verse 15, verse 21 and verse 31 all say the same thing, all that men would praise the Lord for His goodness. And, but you know, we're not doing it like we should. Amen. Our forefathers did it more from what I understand. I guess we could say our foremothers did it more probably than the forefathers did from what I really understand. We men sometimes are just afraid to express our emotions, you know, a little bit, but there's nothing wrong with that, amen? But all that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, but we're not doing it like our forefathers, at least like they said they did, and like we should. Why? Well, I'll give you some reasons, I think, why we're not doing it like we should. First of all, false doctrine began to intensify. in the early 1900s and that's whenever the charismatic movement started by the way. They can't trace their lineage back to Jesus. 1900 Earth, less than 100, not much over, less than 100 years old, about 1912 I think is where it really took a hold. The Chrismatic movement today, the movement of self, the movement of flesh, with the spirit of Antichrist involved in it. In other words, those who had truth, when that movement began to come, those who had truth didn't want to be identified with the false and therefore they began to quieten down. because people carried it to the extreme. You see, therefore they begin to slack off praising God and rejoicing in their salvation and letting their joy be manifested outward because of false doctrine. Don't want to be identified with that. I think another reason that we're not expressing our joy like we should, we're not being fully yielded to the Holy Spirit after your sake. I'm talking about fully yielded. Now the fruit of the Spirit is love joy. peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. And the Bible says in Isaiah 32, 17, he said, And the work of righteousness shall be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness, and assurance forever. So there's peace, but there's also joy. He said, love, joy, and peace. There, the love of God shed abroad in our hearts is an internal reality to the sign of God, shed abroad, poured in like a flood. But if you don't yield to the Holy Spirit and let the inward man be renewed day by day, then the outward man ceases to joy like he should joy. I mean, You see when they finished the tabernacle in the Old Testament time in Moses' day, the glory of the Lord filled it. The Bible said in Exodus chapter 40 verse 33, and Moses, and talking about Moses, he reared up the court, round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the hangings of the court gate. So Moses finished the work. Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode their own, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. And then, in other words, Moses wasn't even able to enter in because of the presence of God. We've heard the expression, so thick you can't cut it. That's an expression. Oh, I wish they'd get that way where you couldn't do anything but just fall on your face and weep or whatever because of the presence. I'm talking about the manifested presence of God. I know God's here. I understand that His omnipresent presence is everywhere. But oh, listen, when the tabernacle was filled, the glory of the God filled it such that they couldn't even enter. And then when the temple, the permanent place that God had in Jerusalem was finished, listen to what it said in 2 Chronicles 5, 13 and 14, It came to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord. And when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the Lord, saying, For He is good, Amen, and they didn't say that then but that's what we say that amen for his mercy endureth forever That then the house was filled with a cloud Even the house of the Lord so that the praises could not stand So that the priest could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud for the glory of the Lord had filled the house and then Solomon prayed and in 2nd Chronicles 7 1 & 2 now when Solomon had made an end of praying the fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering, and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the house. And the priest could not enter into the house of the Lord, because the glory of the Lord had filled the Lord's house. And so therefore we see the glory of the Lord was present in those situations. Now you realize something, when you believe in the Lord, when God's Holy Spirit has done a completed work and you exercise faith in His blood, you're saved. you're justified. And I Peter 118 says this, he said, You rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory. You rejoice in who? In Jesus, not in yourself. It's not rejoicing in the Holy Ghost, amen. It's rejoicing in Jesus. It's all about Him, amen. In other words, it's glory. He said, You rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory, and that glory that he's talking about there is the manifestation of that which brings forth praise. Oh, because of being saved. You see, but these things happen. Joy ceases because we're not fully yielded to the Holy Spirit, or we're afraid to be identified with a false crowd. Amen? Well, another reason that there's not as much joy is there's no fear of God. And I know that's the reason for lost people. I understand that. Psalm 22, verse 23, she says, Ye, that fear of the Lord, praise Him. Now fear means respect and reverence him. Fear is a reverential awe of God with a hatred for evil. I'll tell you another reason that we don't really, we don't really joy, don't practice joy. It's not as prominent in our day as we've left the first love. We've left the first love. He told the church in Romans chapter 2 verse number 4, the church in Ephesus, Revelation chapter 2 verse 4. He said, I've seen your works. I know what you're doing. I realize that you've got a worldwide ministry. You're going all over the world and this thing and that thing. But he said, I have somewhat against you. You've left your first love. John 14, 28, he said, If you love me, you will rejoice. You would rejoice. Another reason that we don't enjoy the day like we should is unconfessed sin. And there's a sin of commission, which means doing what God forbids you to do. And for example, David committed adultery. He committed murder. He lost the outward joy of his salvation. He didn't lose his salvation. He lost his praise and he lost his shout of victory. But in Psalm 51 he confessed his sin before God and in confessing his way back to God in verse number 12 he said, Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation. And then verse 13 he said, Then will I teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners shall be converted unto thee. You see, sinners need to see joy, but the sin of commission, if you please, can cause you not to rejoice if you have not confessed it. Then there's the sin of omission. You see, some people say, I've not committed adultery, I've not done this. But what have you done that God said to do? In other words, the sin of omission is not doing what God said. He requires obedience, and obedience is an open line for God to move. I Samuel 15, 22, whenever old Saul didn't do what he ought to have done, he said, To obey is better than sacrifice. God sent the message through Samuel to him. It's better to obey than sacrifice. Oh, he said, I brought these to sacrifice unto the Lord. God didn't want that. He said he wanted obedience. In other words, sin, Unconfessed sin takes the glory off your life. There's Balaam who was tried to be hired by Balak to cast the stumbling block. Well, first of all, he wanted him to get rid of the glory of God. There's a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night upon the children of Israel, and that represented God's presence, and Balak didn't like it, and so he hired Balaam to try to get the glory of God off of him, but Balak couldn't do it. Balak couldn't take it off. Balaam couldn't take it off. Nobody could take the glory off but he, them himself, themselves. And what did they do? Balak said we can't get it off of them but we can cause them to commit sin and said take your women and carry them out there scanty clad and it will cause the men to go lusting after them and God will take the glory off of them and it happened. I wonder what we're in like in America today. Amen. Oh my, the Balak, the Moabites is out there with the scanty cladness trying to take the glory off because sin enters in, amen. It affects us whether you realize it or not, it does do that. And so therefore sin unconfessed will take the glory off. That's what happened in that day because the glory of God come over. And you see that glory is off that manifestation that brings forth praise, that joy. and sometimes you let trials get you down, sometimes, and it becomes sin. Now remember, Psalm 30, verse number five, he said, weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning, amen. Joy, why don't we have joy? Sin unconfessed and left their first love, not letting the Holy Spirit yield. We're not wanting to identify with some of this crowd that's going off the deep end, but another thing is that most, a lot of professors are still dead. trespasses and sins and I think that's the, the number one thing today, just lost, just been deceived, won't get honest with yourself. In other words, received a counterfeit and won't admit it. Psalm 115 verse 17, he said the dead praise not the Lord. Oh me, Lord help us, the dead. Our text verse says the result of salvation is that we rejoice, we joy in the Lord. We rejoice because our names are written in heaven. You see, if there's no joy, we'd better check up and decide what we'll do about it, you see. The Lord's willing to forgive our sin if it's unconfessed sin, in other words if we'll just confess it. He's willing to save you if you'll continue in His Word and obey the light you've got and continue on. God'll bring you to the place, He'll finish that work in your heart and He'll save you and He'll work, He'll work in you full salvation and then you can enjoy. He said let the redeemed of the earth say so. That's a result of justification. And I feel like there's some somebody didn't do what they're supposed to while ago. There's somebody needs to lift it. You don't have to be redeemed to say so, but just God working in your life. Somebody else may have something you need to say right now that you didn't say. I felt like somebody. Just held it back, didn't do it, afraid she's gonna mess up your makeup or afraid she's gonna weep a little bit or something and you're just afraid to bust loose. I pray you bust loose and give them a little joy today. Anybody got something else? That's a result of justification, but I believe it's a result also of God awakening you and stirring you and helping you. Let the redeemed of the earth say so, but let those that God's working in, let them say so. Anybody got something else? You just need to joy a little bit today. You felt like you needed to and didn't do it. Not wanting to make you do anything, but just joy. Don't want to identify with the wrong crowd. Bless you, bless you. I don't deserve that, amen. But I love you, amen. I'll try to stay with you, okay, amen. All right, somebody else. Somebody else, just joy, a little joy, just something in your heart that you just didn't say and you should have said. Anybody else? May the Lord help us today. Father, I pray that you'll speak to our hearts, that you'll let us be sensitive to you. I plead the blood asking that your will be done. Lord, help us to enjoy and not endure. Help us to joy in what you're doing in our lives, what you're going to do. I pray you'll just help us, Lord. We sure do need it. touch us and we'll thank you for it. I want to say I love you and help and what I don't know what to pray how to add what to ask but Lord just take control of our hearts and lives. help us get to the place that we can express our joy without intimidation, without fear of thinking what others are going to think, without fear of being identified with the wrong crowd. Just help us, Lord, to have the fear of God, the reverence and respect of you that we need in our lives that we'll just enjoy and joy in the things that you've done. May the glory of God manifest itself here in this place and cause us to be joyful and rejoice. praise and give you glory for you're worthy help us today and we'll thank you for what you do for we ask it in Jesus name for his sake we pray heads bowed out
