Numbers 14, 21 through 35. Our title today is complaining. That's it, complaining. Nuestro titulo es el quejarse. Our series is a bilingual sermon as you know. Nuestra serie es un sermon bilingue. Trusting that you have your Bibles open, I will read Numbers 14.21. This is the Word of God. But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord, none of the men who have seen my glory, my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times, and have not obeyed my voice, shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers, and none of those who despise me shall see it. But my servant Caleb, because he was of a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring him to the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. Now since the Amicalites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea. And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, how long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. Say to them, as I live, declares the Lord, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you. Your dead bodies shall fall into this wilderness, and all of your numbers listed in the census from 20 years old and upward will have grumbled against me. None, not one, shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. But your little ones, whom you said would become a prey, I will bring in. They shall know the land that you have rejected. But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall into the wilderness. And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and shall suffer for your faithlessness until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. according to the number of the days in which you have spied out the land, 40 days, a year for each day. You shall bear your iniquity 40 years, and you shall know my displeasure. I, the Lord, have spoken. Surely this I will do to all this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me in this wilderness. They shall come to a full end, and there they shall die. This is the word of the Lord. This is the word of the Lord, Numbers 14, verse 21 to 35. That is the word of the Lord. But as surely as I live and my glory fill the whole earth, all who have seen my glory and my signs that I have done in Egypt and in the desert, and have tempted me ten times, and have not heard my voice, will not see the earth of which I swore to their fathers, nor any of those who have irritated me with the veil. Jehovah spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, How long will I hear this depraved crowd that murmurs against me, the warriors of the children of Israel, who complain about me? Say, I live, says Jehovah, that if you once spoke to my ears, so will I do with you. In this desert will fall your body, all the number of those who were counted among you, from twenty years up, who have murmured against me. You, in truth, will not enter the earth, so I raised my hand and swore that I would make you dwell in it, except Caleb, son of Jephoneh, and Hosuh, son of Nun. But your children, whom you said would be your prey, I will introduce them, and they will know the land that you despised. As for you, your bodies will fall in this desert, and your children will be grazing in the desert for forty years, and they will carry your rebellions until your bodies are consumed in the desert. conforme al numero de los dias de los cuales de los cuarenta dias en que reconociste a la tierra llevará vuestras iniquidades cuarenta años un año por cada día y conocer es mi castigo. Yo Jehová he hablado. Let us pray. Oremos. Padre, Father, we thank you for this time. Bless us in your word, oh Father. Open our understanding. And Father, teach us today the horrible sin that it is to have a complaining, murmuring heart. We pray, oh Father God, that we will leave this place better. In Jesus' name, amen. Today we look at the people whom God rescued from Egypt. God had led his people out of Egypt with a strong hand. God had decimated their enemies and brought forth freedom. You know the story. The people of Israel were slaves in Egypt and it was after 400 years of oppression that God had delivered them. And in liberating them, God demonstrated great care. He protected them through the 10 plagues, and even he protected them from the angel of death. And he took them out as Egypt laid in ruins. Upon delivering the people, the people spent some time in the wilderness on their march towards God's promised land. Throughout their journey, the people demonstrated a great propensity for sin. This sin was manifested in discontented, grumbling hearts. When the people refused to enter into the promised land, God sent them into the wilderness to die. Today we study the very passage in which God passed this grievous sentence upon the people of Israel. Because of their grumbling hearts, let us not forget this, because of their grumbling hearts, the judgment of God fell upon them. Today I would like us then to consider the terrible nature of a complaining heart. I want us to consider the terrible nature of a complaining heart. I think that it is important because we are living in uncertain times, are we not? And all around us we hear the complaints of the discontented. It is easy for us to adopt a similar sinful attitude. Today, I would like us to consider the terrible nature of a grieving heart. And I think this is important because we are living in an uncertain time and around us we hear the complaints of the discontent. It is easy for us to adopt a sinful attitude similar. I know that in looking through social media accounts, in the newspapers and TV, we have seen a lot of discontented people. And it is easy for us to adopt that attitude. But it is a sinful attitude that God prohibits. So let us look at verse 21. Because in verse 21, we find the first thing about complaining. Complaining is an affront to God's glory. And I need you to write this down. If you're gonna write, we actually have a lot of points, but this is one of the major points. Complaining is an affront to God's glory. The Bible says, but truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord. In the versiculo 21 encontramos el primer punto de varios. We know, beloved, that God is concerned with his glory. And we know that the glory of God is the subject of heaven. And we know that the glory of God will one day be manifested completely on this earth. And we know that all men, eventually, all men that are saved, will one day live in glory with God. But we also know that we were created to glorify God. So the reasoning then for the disciplining of a grumbling Israel is presented in this very first verse. Complaining, beloved, as a Christian, or as a follower of God, complaining at its root robs God of His glory. When the people of God complain, they demonstrate to the world their utter disregard for God's glory. I need you to understand that. We know that the purpose of life for the believer, according to the Westminster Confession, and really according to the Word of God, is to live in such a way that we glorify God. To complain accomplishes the exact opposite of our intended purpose. Unfortunately, this is what had happened to Israel. They had gotten into the cycle of complaining. God had delivered them. Dios los había libertado. God had brought them out with a strong hand. Dios los sacó con una mano fuerte. And as soon as they get to the sea, cuando llegan específicamente al océano, al mar rojo, perdón, and as soon as they get to the Red Sea, the first thing they do is they complain against God. And as they cross over, they are thirsty, and they complain against God. And then they're hungry, and then they complain against God. And then they look at Moses, and he says, who died and made you our leader? We can lead ourselves. And they complain against God. And throughout the whole time that they're in the wilderness, they just, they complain and they complain against God and they rob God of his glory. So why is God so harsh with them? Because they're robbing him of his glory. How, you might ask. Well, let's look at verses 22 and 23a. Verses 22 and 23a. Complaining is to disregard God's faithfulness. Complaining is to disregard God's faithfulness. Let's look at those verses. None of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these 10 times, and have not obeyed my voice, shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. I want you to notice what God says. None of the men who have seen my glory and my signs. We are reminded that the people of Israel had seen God's glory displayed in the ten plagues and the signs of God. They had seen God's glory and His signs as the sea is open. They had seen God's glory displayed and how He provided for them. And the Bible says none of these men who have seen it and disregarded it shall enter into the promised land. A grumbling attitude is indicative then of an ungrateful heart. Perhaps you haven't seen it this way, but that is what scripture teaches us. To complain is to forget all the past faithfulness of God. It comes from the heart that blasphemously asks, what have you done for me today? Without remembering God's faithfulness yesterday. What a horrible heart it is that forgets the blessings of God, that forgets the blessings of salvation, liberation, justification, sanctifications, the means of grace, and a trillion other blessings that have been bestowed upon us by a great and wonderful God. ¿Qué corazón tan horrible olvida las bendiciones de la salvación, la liberación, justificación, santificación, los medios de gracia, and a billion other blessings that have been granted to us by a God who loves us. Ten times had these complainers railed against the anointed of God, Moses. And ten times they had therefore complained against God himself. Ten times they had disregarded all of God's bountiful care. And here I wanna ask you to consider the mercy of God. They had complained against him upon leaving Egypt. And God didn't kill them. God dealt with their complaining. God provided a column of fire. God provided a cloud. God fed them. Dios le dio de comer. God gave them water. Dios le dio agua. God took care of them. Dios los cuidó. And they kept complaining ten times. And God chose not to kill them every time they complained. Until the 10th time. Where God says that's enough. I want you to consider this. We serve a gracious God. And so they complained, they disregarded God's faithfulness. And God is hurt by this. Let's look at verse 23, the last part. Which teaches us that complaining is to despise God. And none of those who despise me shall see it. This is a stark truth, isn't it beloved? When you complain, What you're truly doing is you're despising God. It is to look at God and say, neither your past faithfulness nor your very person is good enough for me today. What a horrible thing to say to a gracious God. They despised God. And verse 24 teaches us that complaining is indicative then of a sinful and carnal heart. Listen to what the Bible says, but my servant Caleb Because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring him to the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it." I want you to notice that Caleb had a different heart according to the word of God. In order not to complain, It takes a different spirit that fully follows the Lord. What does this mean to you and me, beloved? It means that complaining is a natural condition of the unregenerate heart, of the unregenerate loss. It also means that to complain as a Christian is to revert back to sinful and carnal thinking. To not complain, you need a different spirit that completely follows the Lord. What does this mean for you and for me? It means that complaining is a natural condition of the lost and not regenerated in the heart. It also means that complaining, as a Christian, is returning to sinful and carnal thinking. Every time you complain, you are no better than an unbeliever. It takes a different heart to follow God. A heart that follows God and loves God and trusts God. That's what Caleb had, and that's what Joshua had. And so the same situations by which Israel complained, they saw as a situation to bring glory to God. They entered into the same land to spy it out. Ten men came back and said, it is a good land. It is full of blessing. But there are terrible fighting men there. We can't win. We can't go in there or we will die. And two men, if you remember Caleb and Joshua, they said, yes, the land is beautiful. And yes, it is a blessing. And yes, there are these men there that are terrible fighting men. But if we trust God, they will be our bread. We will eat them up. We will win. Same situation, different heart. I want you to notice that. So we ignore the faithfulness of God if we complain. And we complain and we despise God. It's showing this carnal heart. O Beloved, that God would give us all a different spirit, a spirit like that of Joshua and Caleb, that we would trust God, that God would do this for us. Let's look at verse 25. This is another thing that complaining does. Complaining robs the believer of God's blessing. El quejar se roba al creyente de las bendiciones de Dios. Look at what verse 25 says. Now since the Amicalites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea. Ahora bien, el almacita y el cananeo habitan en el valle. Volveo mañana y salida al desierto, camino del mar rojo. Because they had complained incessantly God denies them the entrance into the promised land. What was to be theirs was lost to them because of a grumbling heart. What was to be theirs was lost to them because of a complaining attitude. Let us think deeply about this beloved. Let us think really deeply about this because I wonder what has been lost to you and I because of a complaining heart. What has been lost to you and I because we have complained about God's provision, God's leadership, God's leading and God's love. I wonder how many times God has taken us to a promised land, a blessing, and God has asked us to turn around and leave because we've complained against the very God who has led us. I want you to consider such a thing. I want you to consider the following too. The promised land was symbolic of the final rest of the believer. Here we find the truth that a constant complaining heart is not a regenerated heart. Here we find the truth that a grumbler will not enter into God's rest. And this alone should cause us to evaluate our attitude before God. Because yes, we've complained here and there, and we should, and we should repent. But if you're a constant complainer, if that's all you know, it's indicative of a heart that has never come to God. Because you're not finding your sufficiency in Jesus Christ. And this should cause you alarm, and you should reflect upon where you are with God today. La Tierra Prometida era simbólica del descanso final del creyente. Aquí encontramos la verdad de que un corazón constantemente murmurador no es un corazón regenerado. Aquí encontramos la verdad de que un murmurador no entrará en el descanso de Dios. Esto debería hacernos evaluar nuestra actitud ante Dios. Y todos nos hemos quedado delante de Dios una vez en cuando. Let us look at verses 26 and 27. Complaining is always an attack against God. El versículo 26 y 27, el quejarse siempre es un ataque contra Dios. What do I mean? Well, let's read. And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. Do you notice that God takes it personally? How long am I gonna put up with these people, God says, complaining against me? Hasta cuando yo voy a estar con esta pueblo que se queja de mi? How long, says God, hasta cuando? I remind you, beloved, and I think this is very important to pay close attention to this, that the people had never really directly complained against God, but they had complained against the leader that God had appointed to them. And therefore, God took it personally. In complaining against God's provided leader, God's provision, they were really complaining against God himself. I want you to know this because this is a huge point for you and I to consider. When you complain about what God is giving you, Not necessarily directly against God, but what God is giving you, without knowing it, you are complaining against a God who gives it. And you're actually fighting Him. The fight that you're fighting is against God. So when you complain against your wife or your husband or your work or your boss, you're really complaining against God. God has provided these things. And sometimes God puts us in difficult situations. And to complain in those situation is really to complain against God. I need you to understand that. They never ever said, God, we're complaining against you. It was always to Moses. You brought us here to die. You brought us here to make us thirst until we die. You brought us here. You don't know where you're taking us. It was always against Moses, but Moses was God's blessing in their life. They always complained against Moses. You brought us here to die. You brought us here to die of hunger or thirst. You don't know where you're taking us. But in complaining against Moses, they were complaining against the blessing that God gave them in giving Moses. So when God speaks here, he doesn't say, I am tired of their complaining against you, Moses. God says, how long shall they complain against me? God takes it personally. It is a personal offense to God to complain. I don't know if you've ever thought about it this way. But it is dire to complain. Let's look at verses 28, 29, and 30. in which we read complaining, in which we understand that complaining is really to mistrust God. The Bible says, what you have said in my hearing, I will do to you. Your dead body shall fall in the wilderness, and all of your numbers listed in the census from 20 years old and upward who have grappled against me, not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except for Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, the son of Nun." Here we see that God was aware of their hearts as He is aware of ours. He heard their hearts. He heard their conversations. He heard their complaining. In these, He had heard them whisper all their mistrust about God and God's love. He is aware of our hearts. God heard their hearts and their private conversations. God had heard them murmur their distrust against Him and His Majesty. Even in the face of God's goodness, they concluded that God hated them and brought them out to die. God, in bringing them to the land, only intended blessing. And they concluded that God brought them out to die. In other words, they mistrusted the goodness of God. Why did you bring us out here to die? When God had specifically told them that He had brought them there to bless them. And they understood it as a cursing. They didn't trust God. Verse 31. I think this is important. Complaining hurts others. Complaining hurts others. But your little ones. who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have rejected. And a little further on, God says, they shall bear your iniquities. Because they had been rejected, all of Israel had to wander in the desert. This included those who were under the age of 20 that would inherit the land at a later date. Notice, beloved, the complaining generation not only disqualified themselves, but they caused their children to not enter into the rest of the Lord for an extra 40 years. It affected the lives of their children. When you complain, it affects other people. I need you to understand that it will affect your children, it'll affect your grandchildren, it'll affect your neighbor, it'll affect your church, it'll affect everyone around you if you have a complaining heart. A complaining heart is a cancer. Complaining is not only self-destructive, it is also a cancer that hurts and or destroys others. I need you to understand that. And in verse 32 and verse 33, we find that, and this is what I'm about to say is very harsh. I need you to kind of give me a few seconds before you think anything about it. Just listen to what I'm about to say. Complaining is adultery against God. Complaining is adultery against God. El quejarse es adulterio contra Dios. El quejarse es adulterio contra Dios. Let's look at what the scripture says. Miremos las escrituras. But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in the wilderness, and your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and shall suffer for your faithlessness until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. The word translated here, faithfulness, the Greek word, zenuth, the definition of that word is adultery, infidelity, fornication, unfaithfulness, whoredom. Therefore, complaining against God is a marital unfaithfulness against Him. It brings about suffering. It is an ugly word that we have before us. To complain is a grievous sin akin to being an adulterer or a prostitute in a relationship where we shouldn't be either one of those things. The word translated as lack of faith here in Greek, senus, is defined as adultery, infidelity, fornication, and prostitution. Complaining is a matrimonial infidelity against God. It brings great suffering and is a terrible word that is before us. Complaining is a serious sin similar to being an adulterer or a prostitute. I don't know if you understood complaining in these terms before. But God says to them, and He says it right there in that verse, you have been unfaithful. God is calling them, He said, you're adulterers. We're supposed to be in this loving relationship. Husband and wife, God and the church. Christ in the church. And you complain against me. You're saying that you would be better off somewhere else. You want to leave me. You have left me. You have been unfaithful in your marriage vows. God is equating this, and he does this by the way throughout the Old Testament, to a marriage relationship. To complain against God is to complain against the husband of the church. This is a terrible sin, and God equates to adultery. I wonder if we ever see complaining as God sees it. I don't think so. We expect complaining from our children. We expect complaining from our teens. We expect that our wives, our husbands are going to complain. We expect that this world complains. And we don't ever think about it the way God thinks about it. Complaining is a horrible sin. Let's look at verse 34. In case this wasn't obvious, complaining brings God's displeasure. According to the number of the days in which you have spied out the land, 40 days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity 40 years and you shall know my displeasure. You shall know my judgment. The Israelites would bear their sins for 40 years. They had spied out the land for 40 days. And after seeing that the land was good, they still found reasons to complain against it. And this is very American, isn't it? Esto es muy americano. To see something as good and still find something wrong with it. This is very common, es muy común. Remember, Joshua and Caleb, they saw the same land and their report was, it's good, we should enter it. The ten other men said, it's good, we will die if we enter it. They all saw the same thing, but they had a different heart. This is what had happened here. They had found a negative. They had found a reason to complain. Because of this, God states that they would have to bear God's displeasure. This word in the Greek is tenua. It means opposition, alienation, and immunity. Therefore, complaining against God alienates us from God. God becomes our opposing force. God becomes our enemy. What a terrible fate to have God be opposed to us because of our sinful, complaining attitude. When you complain, You have to suffer God's displeasure. Enemity. Opposition. That's not the place you want to find yourself. And let us look at our last verse. Complaining finally brings death. El quejarse finalmente trae muerte. I, the Lord, have spoken. Surely this will I will do to all this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me. In this wilderness, they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die. Yo, Jehovah, he ha hablado. Notice again that God calls the complainers wicked. He says they are a wicked congregation. Not only that, he calls the complainer an enemy that stands against his holy rule when he says the congregation who are gathered together against me. The picture is of them standing with spears ready to fight God. When you complain, you are literally trying to fight God. You are being wicked. And if you're always complaining, you're always wicked. You're always fighting against God. What is the natural outcome to opposing God and fighting against His sovereignty? Well, the natural outcome is that God wins and man dies. Complaining, listen, kills the complainer. Complaining kills the complainer, whether it's spiritually or physically, complaining kills the complainer. So we have seen what complaining does, haven't we? We don't like it. It is ugly, isn't it? And we do it so often. May God forgive us. Do not fall into this trap. Do not become a complainer of heart. Give God the glory. In the good times, in the bad times, give God the glory. I want to conclude with the following thought. I want us to look at all the verses. And I want us to summarize it. Listen to what I'm about to say because I think it's very important. There's always the idolatry of self. Why do we complain? Because we don't feel that we should be treated the way we are being treated. We feel we deserve better. Why did Israel complain? Because they felt like they weren't being taken care of. Ask yourself, why did Israel complain? Was it not because they thought that they deserved better than what they were receiving from God and from Moses? They complain because they love themselves more than they love God and His glory. When you complain, you're loving yourself more than you love God. Because if you were loving God more than yourself, you would not complain. Isn't that true, beloved? Why do we complain? Because we feel we deserve better. I want you to consider this. I want you to consider the following thing I'm about to say. When you complain, you act like Satan himself. I want you to consider what the Bible says about Satan and Isaiah. He looked at God. Seated on the throne. Glorious. And he said, why does he get to sit there? I should be there. I'm not being treated rightly. I deserve more. Is that what he said? According to the word of God? He complained in his heart that he didn't have the appropriate place. and sin entered into him. So when we complain, we are not acting like God. We are acting like the enemy. We're acting carnal. We're acting as if we have an unregenerate heart. Beloved, I wanna stress to you the importance of what we're talking about. I don't want you to leave this place going, oh yeah, that's right, complaining is bad, and then continue on your life. I need you to take stock. Do I complain? And some of you might say, no, I never do out loud. But if you do it inside, it's the same thing. We gotta stop this. We cannot act like the world. This is natural for the world. It should be unnatural for the believer. Next week, by God's grace, I want to talk to you about the opposite, contentment. I don't want you to leave without at least considering what contentment means. So I want to read to you a few verses, just so that you can see the difference. Philippians 4, 11. Philippians 4, 11. It's a verse that you know. It says, not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am in to be content. You hear the difference? You hear the difference? Philippians 4, 11. Whatever situation. Romans, we're so fond of Romans, right? Chapter eight. We love the word of God where it says, for all things work together for good. But we forget that all things means all things. The same situation that you're complaining about, a Christian that is following God can glorify God in. We see it in Joshua and Caleb. We look at that person in our lives that we complain about. And we forget the million blessings that God has brought in our life because of that person. And we focus only on the part that we want to complain about. We look at our job and we complain about our job without saying thank you God for all the food that it provides. Beloved, we complain without thinking of blessings. Philippians, Paul says, in every situation, I have found contentment. I want us to consider 1 Timothy 6, 6-7. But godliness with contentment is great gain. Listen for this, for we brought nothing into the world and we cannot take anything out of the world. What do you have that you're going to take? What do you have in this world that you're going to be able to take with you? Nothing, nada. Beloved, the only thing you have right now that you're going to take with you. It's not from this world. It's Jesus Christ. Jesus is not of this world. Salvation belongs to God. Think about your blessings. If you are a believer, you have come to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. God took you from the trash heap. Dios te quito de la basura. And God saved you. Dios te salvó. God showed you Jesus Christ. Dios te enseñó a Jesucristo. You ran to Christ. Corriste a Cristo. God forgave you through Christ. Dios te perdonó mediante Jesucristo. God gave you His righteousness. God has done these things for you. What is there to complain about? If our life was only misery from this point on, we should still find contentment. We should still be able to raise holy hands and worship God for the salvation that we have in Jesus Christ. You have the greatest treasure. You have Jesus Christ. To complain is to forget God's blessings. Beloved, let us not do this great and terrible sin. Let us find within ourselves the ability to raise hands to God and glorify Him for all that He does. He is worthy. Amen. Let us pray. Father, we thank you for this time. We thank you for this word. Teach us, oh Father God, what it means for us to be a contented people. Teach us, O Father God, how horrible it is to complain. May we see it for what it is, adultery, despising God, attacking God, and all that we learn. May we guard our hearts. from ever, Lord, complaining against you. We find in all situations our contentment. We pray this in Christ's name. Amen. Amen.
