There are many things that are joyful and lift our hearts during the Christmas season. Everything and everyone seems so festive! Houses are decorated inside and out. Those “ugly” Christmas sweaters begin to appear. Christmas songs are heard all around. Warm traditions are held. Families get together. Food is enjoyed. Gifts are exchanged. As the song goes, one can readily see why it’s called the most wonderful time of the year.
As believers we know all these joyful things are not the thing. These are the wrappings, not the present. These are the expressions of joy that surround and are meant to point us to the deepest joy. These are Christmas “extras”; they are not Christmas.
Christmas is Matthew 1:21. “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” That’s Joy! That’s Christmas! The Father’s promise is fulfilled. The Son has come. Sin is now erased and forgiven. Salvation is granted.
The true joy of Christmas is gospel joy! The Son saves! That truly makes for a merry Christmas!
