The Christian life is a battle. A War. A Fight. Darkness does not welcome light. Sin is insatiable. The enemy is relentless. The flesh craves satisfaction. Each and every day we are at war with our old sinful nature within us and the world and the enemy outside us. They never stop. They never slow. They will never quit until the Day of the Lord Jesus. As believers when our feet hit the ground the battle begins, and it doesn’t let up until we fall to sleep at night - and sometimes not even then.
With such constant, vigilant attack from within and from without, how are we to survive? How will we not grow battle weary, worn, and surrender? How are we to not only win but to have joyful victory?
We must remember, we not only have a worthy adversary, we have a capable Advocate! Yes, the assaults on our soul, mind, and body are constant, heavy, and from all fronts, but our Savior stands sure. He has given us all the grace we need to stand firm and victorious against the flesh and against the enemy.
For the wars within, God has given us the Spirit of God to dwell within us. The fruit of the Spirit, flowing from hearts resisting temptation and pursuing Christ, are more than enough to squelch the rising weaknesses and temptations of our flesh. It’s hard to give in to sin when our lives are flowing with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control! (Gal 6:22-23)
For the wars without, God has given us the graces contained in our salvation that are more than sufficient to defeat the enticements of the enemy and the deceptions of the world. We can stand firm in the armor of truth, righteousness, the gospel, faith, salvation, and the Word of God, as we are in constant prayer. (Eph 6:13-18)
For the wars within, we have the fruit of the Spirit. For the wars without, we have the graces of salvation. Therefore, may we fight the fight of faith……and win…..by the grace and strength which He alone supplies!
