The language of the gospel is free grace. In this transaction between God and man, everything is free, and everything is now ready [vs1].
“Come, all you who are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you without money,
come, buy, and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost!
There’s not one thing you must do to be worthy! Come as a poor sinner, and He’ll give repentance and faith! Come as unworthy, and He’ll give you the Son of God, the Bread that is from heaven. He’ll give eternal life to the vilest offender, but we MUST come with nothing of our own. We must come as unworthy. That is the qualification of the gospel!
Why spend money on that which is not bread,
and your labor on that which does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
and your soul will delight in the richest of foods. vs2
God will give you the forgiveness of sins. He’ll give what Christ has earned, and these are sure mercies [vs3]. He will not let you down. This is not a false promise, a scam, or wasted labor! This is rewarded with the eternal sacrifice of God’s dear Son - the one time offering for sin unto death. He’ll give you the blessings of the gospel, and no one will be turned away empty. No one will be cast out; it is only the unworthy who come.
Secondly, God is absolutely sovereign, and He draws men unto Himself [vs5].
Behold, I have made him a witness to the nations,
a leader and commander of the peoples [Jesus Christ].
Surely you will summon a nation you do not know,
and nations who do not know you will run to you. vs4-5
His banquet will not be empty, but He will compel them to come in! Therefore, let us be zealous and preach boldly. Let us never fear contradiction, but preach all the Scripture teaches, never bothering to rationalize it, lower it, or explain it away, but proclaim all of it.
Eat of free grace. The Sovereign God commands you and draws men in. His house will be full!
Finally, you need pardon [vs6-7]! We need the forgiveness of sins! We are criminals against God Himself, and He will pardon, or He will punish! He will save you, or He will damn!
Seek the LORD while He may be found;
call on Him while He is near.
Let the wicked man forsake his own way
and the unrighteous man his own thoughts;
let him return to the LORD,
that He may have compassion,
and to our God,
for He will freely pardon.
Fear and tremble, poor sinner! Do not stand outside the feast making excuses! Do not say that you have more important business. This is eternal life or eternal damnation - forever happy or forever miserable in hell. Come to Jesus WHILE YOU CAN, and He will take you. Linger no longer.
