“PLEASING TO GOD, APPROVED BY MEN” [Rom 14:10-18]

“Therefore let not your good be spoken of as evil. For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. For the one serving Christ in these things is well-pleasing to God and approved by men.” vs16-18

God has shown us the way to be acceptable. It is not by contentiousness, selfishness, and pride. It is by loving each other in our liberty, and living for brothers more than freedoms. Love is the better way. We serve in righteousness, peace, and joy of the Spirit.

First, love is a better way. He says, “No longer, therefore, should we judge one another; but rather determine this, not to put any stumbling block or snare before your brother [vs13].” Our brothers are more important than our freedoms. It is more important to serve, which is true freedom - freedom to obey, to love, and to do good. Never put your liberties before Christ, making pleasure more important than people. Christ has taught us this. The Lord over all gave up His life to save us. Therefore, we can do a little to save others. “Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to stumble [1 Cor 8:13].”

Heaven is coming, when we’ll no longer have to say “no” to ungodliness, but until that day, let us put others above ourselves by SACRIFICING for them.

Secondly, this sacrifice is in things indifferent. Paul says, “I know and I am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean of itself, except to him reckoning anything to be unclean—to that one it is unclean. For if on account of food your brother is grieved, no longer are you walking according to love. Do not destroy with food that one of you for whom Christ died [vs14-15].” He’s not talking about things vital to the gospel. Spurgeon said, “"I will not budge an inch from the old doctrine for any man....We will hearken to no teaching but that of the Lord Jesus." In this, he was right! We must not cower or waver, giving up essentials - like how we are saved and Sola Scriptura. We can, however, refuse to eat meat that’s been offered to an idol. We know the idol is nothing, but the weaker brother may look upon us and compromise: He may see us enjoying ourselves and pay homage to the idol, causing him to sin against his weak conscience.

Paul uses himself and Barnabas as examples in 1 Cor 9:5-6. “Have we no right to take along a believing wife, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas? Or are Barnabas and I the only apostles who must work for a living?” They gave up the right to be supported, and they didn’t take wives - not because they didn’t have a right, but because Paul refused to be seen as preaching for money in newly established churches. They had a right to marry but gave up that right, by God’s gift, to serve the brothers. We must do the same: Do all things to save some. Some are so caught up in their freedoms (what they don’t have to do) that they do not care for the brothers -(what they can do).

Thirdly, serve in righteousness, peace, and joy! “For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit [vs14].” Be righteous, not only by imputation but by actual conduct. Walk in peace towards your neighbor, as well as with God. Joy will be the result of this Holy Spirit filled life! It will not let you down. Your reward is from the Lord.

Too many are miserable because we do not serve. We serve ourselves, and think the gospel has no power. We live selfishly and wonder what is wrong. It is simple, we build OUR house when HIS house lies in ruins. “You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought the harvest home, I ruined it. Why?’ says the Lord. ‘Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house [Hag 1:9].” We are concerned for our happiness but living for ourselves is guaranteed unhappiness! Do not be foolish. Live according to God’s commands by the power of God’s Spirit and peace will come, joy will be produced, and righteousness will be walked in.

Do not serve because you think it makes you better. We all stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ accepted because of what He’s done, but He is pleased with faith [Rom 14:10-12].

Finally, live your life to the glory of God, and you will live for people in gospel liberty. You’ll love because you’re free, not bound. You’ll serve because you’re accepted, not earning favor. You’ll love God by serving others, and He’ll reward you. Conduct yourself in Christ’s kingdom according to Christ’s example.
