“WE MUST BE SHIPWRECKED” [Acts 27:1-26]

“‘Look! God has graciously given you all those who are sailing with you.’ Therefore, take courage, men, because I believe God that it will be just the way it was told to me. However, we must be shipwrecked on a certain island.” vs25-26

We think we can make it, but we cannot. We think the skill of our hands can bring us to peace, safety, and eternal heaven, but it cannot. We must be saved. “After we had moved along the coast with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens [vs8].”

We trust our own instincts. “But contrary to Paul’s advice, the centurion was persuaded by the pilot and by the owner of the ship [vs11].” We are abominable creatures that refuse to believe God. If our hearts were tuned, we’d receive His counsel immediately. The fact that we hesitate and deny the gospel shows the corruption within.

We think we’re smarter than God, and Satan obliges us. “When a gentle south wind began to blow, they thought they had their opportunity. So they weighed anchor and sailed along, hugging the coast of Crete [vs13].” We give up Christ’s counsel, and yet we have a little peace. We sin, and yet it goes well, seemingly. We are troubled in conscience, but then it goes away, and we say, “Aha, we’re right after all”, and we disregard Him more and more. If He didn’t send the storm, then we couldn’t be saved. “But it was not long before a cyclone called the Northeaster swept down across the island [vs14].” If He didn’t take away all hope, then we’d never have hope [vs20].

We should have listened to God. “After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up among them and said, ‘Men, you should have followed my advice not to sail from Crete. Then you would have averted this disaster and loss [vs21].’” It will be made known to us that we have sinned against the Light! We are not in this position as innocent victims but as rebels against His face. We’ve despised His dominion, challenged His rule, and we deserve death. Yet, He’s come to us in mercy. Paul says, “Now I urge you to take courage, because there will be no loss of any of your lives, but only of the ship [vs22].” No one is saved by confessing OTHER PEOPLE’S sins! It is always our own, and we are forgiven as guilty.

Even though we have troubled God and gone the wrong way; even though we have disobeyed Him like Paul by going to Jerusalem, and denied Him like Paul by claiming to be a Pharisee, He stands with us. Paul said, “Just last night an angel of God, whose I am and whom I serve, stood beside me and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And look, God has granted you the lives of all who sail with you [vs23-24].’” He is not against us but for us, and He gives us other souls for our hire. Even when we lived in sin, it served His good purpose. Even when we didn’t serve as we ought, He has used it to save others. The grace of God is unfathomable; it is beyond our comprehension; it doesn’t stop at the will of man, but it overcomes our sin and gives salvation to many. God is not enslaved by our faithfulness.

Finally, we must lose all hope in self. We cannot be saved by human ingenuity, works, or will-power; it must be God showing us mercy. “Howbeit, we must fall upon a certain island [vs26].” The ship must be broken up.
