“THEY ACCOMPANIED HIM” [Acts 20:28-38]

"Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee… The following night the Lord stood by Paul and said, 'Take courage! As you have testified about Me in Jerusalem, so also you must testify in Rome.” vs6, 11

The Lord stands by us when we have sinned. This is the hope and testimony of the gospel - that though we are sinners still, He never leaves us and forsakes us. He says, "I will not violate My covenant or alter the utterance of My lips (Ps 89:34)." He maintains covenant mercy as a covenant keeping God. He keeps His promises when we fail.

First, do not be discouraged. "The following night the Lord stood by Paul." This is the lot of the Christian: You've been chosen to obtain an inheritance that cannot be taken away [1 Pet 1:4]. It is not by works, but by grace, and love covers a multitude of sins. He didn't call Paul because he was perfect, but because God Himself is perfect, just, and kind. God is gracious in Christ Jesus.

In failure, Paul learns the humility that would serve him well in receiving Mark and ministering to poor sinners (2 Tim 4:11). Here, he'd learn again that he's nothing, "less than the least of all the saints." Here, he'd learn it's not the greatness of Paul but Jesus Christ. He'd gone back to Jerusalem in proud rebellion, and now he'd failed in his own strength, going back to the vomit he'd cast out - claiming himself a Pharisee to save his neck. Denying Christ like Peter, he said, "Brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee (Vs6).”

You and I are nothing. We're kept by grace, and grace gets the glory. God's merciful to sinners and saints who fall, or there'd never be any salvation. His mercies fail not. He is with us to the end.

Secondly, be courageous! He says, "Take courage." Don't be cowardly and fearful because you've sinned, but take hold of the covenant. Believe your God, and you will be established (2 Chron 20:20). Call on Him in trouble and trust His love. Go back to Him poor in spirit, humble yourself, and bow to be saved by grace. Do not rely on yourself or dwell in your sin, but trust Christ to give WHAT YOU DON’T DESERVE, again.

Salvation is God doing for you, from where you are. He knows your temptations and your weakness. He knows if He doesn't help, then there'll be no help, no rising, and no good fruit. Be a peacemaker and preach the gospel because you have obtained mercy. Be willing to suffer for being faithful, because He's cleansed your unfaithfulness, purified your heart by the Spirit, and given you power by forgiveness (Matt 5:3-8).

We are not great, but God is great, and that is our gospel message. Proclaim His grace for poor sinners. Show them the way is easy by faith, difficult by temptations, snares, and falls, and proclaim how God saves from it all. Give no indication that it's the strength of the flesh.

Thirdly, God accomplishes His purpose BY our falls. Our Lord said, "As you have testified about Me in Jerusalem, so also you must testify in Rome.” All trains are on track and on schedule. Don't dwell in your past! See how it gives you the opportunity to serve God now. He says, "I will repay you for the years eaten by locusts—the swarming locust, the young locust, the destroying locust, and the devouring locust —My great army that I sent against you (Joel 2:25)."

Have you squandered your years? Then speak with a tender heart, warn men, and tell them the joy you have now, but don't be discouraged. He uses your falls to make you useful now. Yes, it would have been better if we had hearkened, but He doesn't throw us away and stamp, "Useless!"

Are you dying in a hospital bed, filled with HIV, because you've lived a sinful life? Do not be discouraged. Let the fear of the Lord and great joy ring from you. The revival of the Great Awakening got started after a young woman died. She'd been careless, until death was at her door. Then, she got concerned and testified to many with great boldness and heavenly assurance that God rescued her. She died persuading others to trust Christ, and the town was changed.

→ Be bold like a lion, tender like one who's obtained mercy, and wise like someone who's learned that the Lord stands by fallen saints. Serve Him now. Serve Him now! Be encouraged.
