“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ So they said, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household.’” vs30-31

Here is the most important question, “What must I do to be saved”, and here is the answer, “Believe on the Lord Jesus.” It is that profound and that simple. It is faith in the Son of God AFTER He’s been revealed to you. Trusting a false christ can never save you, but when the true word of God is preached, then believing on Him will save your eternal soul.

Who is He? He is the Lord Jesus. He is absolute Savior and Lord, both, in one glorious Person. We do not take His salvation and get the lordship later. No, we take them both at the same time. He saves as Lord, and as Savior, He sets His lordship up in our life. 1 Cor 8:6, “Yet for us there is one God, the Father. All things are from Him, and we exist for Him. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ. All things are through Him, and we exists through Him.”

Many want a god whom they can serve, but the dominion of sin is broken by Jesus Christ, and He gives us a new heart and the Holy Spirit. He gives us power that we do not have to bow to His lordship and receive His will for our life, and it is all by believing; it is not doing; it is not something that we muster in ourselves; it is receiving Him for who He is, and His word puts power in us.

Here, in Acts 16, we have THREE ILLUSTRATIONS of the saving power of Christ.

1 There is a woman named Lydia, a Jewess, perhaps an old testament believer given new testament revelation, but she received the word: she paid attention to it, and God opened her heart. We read, "A woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God, was listening. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was spoken by Paul [vs14].

He causes people to hear with understanding and intensity. They are not merely picking words, but they are striving after the meaning.

2 We see another woman, a young slave girl, who has the spirit of fortune telling (vs16). All miracles were not of God, and we have lying signs and wonders now, but she heard Paul and Silas and knew that they were God’s men [vs17]. Paul commanded the evil spirit in her, and he came out [vs18]. We read, "But Paul was greatly aggravated," because she continued in sin, while claiming them God's true messengers, "and turning to the spirit, said, 'I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!' And it came out this hour (vs18)."

Thus, the gospel command, “Believe”, is powerful. The command to live a new life, to repent, and to give up sin comes with authority. It is more than knowing that He saves; it is being saved by Him and surrendering to this power.

As we command in the name of the Lord, the Lord gives the sinner power. He casts out the demon, so let us be bold and authoritative, rather than shy. Let us never have timid Christianity (2 Tim 1:7).

3 There is a jailor. He is unconcerned. He couldn’t care less about Paul and Silas. He’s simply doing his job, caring only about his family. But, he sees the Lord’s power [vs27]! "When the jailer woke up and saw the doors of the prison open, he drew his sword and was going to kill himself, since he thought the prisoners had escaped." He sees them free, even though imprisoned, and when sinners see us REJOICING in Christ, even though we are suffering, they are guilty, and they realize that WE HAVE what they don’t have." About midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the jail were shaken, and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone's chains were loose (vs25-26)."

Brothers, let us use our times of adversity, not to complain but to praise and sincerely sing unto God. Let it not be done to please man, justify us, or impress people, but let our hearts be filled, and He will show people a power that’s real. Then, they will ask us. Then they will inquire, “What must I do to be saved? How can I get what you have?”

Finally, the answer is plain, “Believe on the Lord Jesus.” Put your faith in Him. Trust Him to save you. Don’t move a muscle. Don’t improve yourself. Believe that He’s given you new life because He took away your sin. Believe that He blesses repentance, and confess Him your Lord and Savior, as this jailor did in baptism. Believe that faith is enough, and be whole of your plague. Cast away your fear. You are saved by the Lord Jesus.
