“YOUR GLORY” [Ex 33:18-34:8]
SUNDAY, MAY 12, 2019

“Then Moses said, “Please, show me Your glory.’ He said, ‘I will cause all My goodness to pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.’” vs18-19

1 The glory of God is sovereign mercy. This is not a small issue. This is NOT something that we can differ on. We must believe that God has mercy on whom He will, or we are not Christian, and we don’t believe in grace.

He has mercy upon us because we are sinners. If you want justice, then you can have it, but it is hell without pity. If YOU WANT MERCY, then you can have that too, because the same Lord over all is rich to all who call on Him [Rom 10:12].

Do not fear, but bow. Sovereign mercy is the gospel.

2 “Rock of Ages, cleft for me”, is a famous hymn by Augustus Toplady, who fled from a storm. The crevice of a rock reminded him that Jesus Christ was crucified, so that we could behold God, so that we could bask in His glory, being saved from our sins, because God is a consuming fire - too bright and too holy - but we see Him through Jesus Christ [vs21-22].

The God who can’t let sin slide, the God who must punish, is pacified in Jesus Christ, entreats sinners, and reveals God’s glory to them.

Do not be afraid. Look on Jesus Christ and see the fullness of God.

3 The law must be upheld [Ex 34:1-4]. “Then the LORD said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the original ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.” We cannot see God as anything less than the Perfect Law Giver, a God who must punish sin, absolutely holy, just in all His ways, and demands holiness from all His subjects.

When the angels sinned, they were chained for hell [2 Pet 2:4]. When Adam sinned, the whole human race was cursed. Do not play games here. God will not play with you. He is more JUST AND HOLY than He is loving. He hated Esau, but He’s holy always. He hates sin, and in all of His mercy, He is absolutely just through the shed blood of His Son. His law is so holy that He makes us holy after He saves us.

4 It is a proclamation [vs5]. “And the LORD descended in a cloud, stood with him there, and proclaimed His name, the LORD.” This is not an argument or debate. He is not going to change. He is who He is, and He will declare it! We’ll either get in on mercy or get destroyed. We’ll bow, or we’ll be burned. We’ll take Him, or He’ll cast us away forever. Do not play games and be too clever for your own good. Do not twist Scripture.

5 Aren’t you glad God is full of mercy [vs6]? “Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and truth. Keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.” He doesn’t have to reveal Himself this way [Heb 2:16]. He owes us no mercy. We do not deserve it, nor can we demand it! It is a foolish notion that we deserve something for being guilty! The Judge owes us nothing.

He is merciful, however, and He is full of it and delights in it. Micah says, “Who is a God like unto You, who pardons iniquity, and passes by the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He retains not His anger forever, because He delights in mercy.” He will show mercy to every sinner, and He shows mercy by plotting and planning it. He is SO MERCIFUL that He saves people who would not come to Him, could not come to Him, and spit in His face. He draws us in grace. He has such compassion that He seeks us out and finds us. He doesn’t leave it up to us: He saves.

6 False religion is the most dangerous thing [vs7]! “But who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” Let every man be guilty of everything but spreading false religion, because God will punish fathers and children as generation after generation passes on lies.

I’m not against sinners in any way, but any religion that is not the truth of the gospel will not save you, no matter who taught it or what you’ve experienced. Your feelings are not more important than what God says. Your lying signs and wonders are FALSE ASSURANCE, leading men to everlasting perdition, making them unwilling to listen. Be shaken from it. Don’t hold to it because it feels right; it must harmonize with Scripture rightly interpreted.

Finally, everyone God saves worships [vs8]. “Moses immediately bowed down to the ground and worshiped.” Nobody sees the glory of God and remains unchanged. No man can stand up and prance around, but we must all fall in adoration - that the Mighty God, the Maker of Heaven and Hell, the One who could have destroyed us, died for our sins, paid the penalty, and gave us the blessing… not because we were seeking or wise, but because He was gracious to forgive how we hardened our heart against Him.

You’ll worship Him by loving your neighbor and spreading the truth. You’ll worship Him by being faithful. You’ll worship Him because you love Him.
